Nixon vetoes border war tax cuts (MO)

Glad to see the governor of MO has some sense. What KS is doing is wrong and MO doesn't need to be copying them.

This bill also imposed taxes on college textbooks. Glad to see the veto.

Missouri Gov. Jay Nixon vetoed a major tax cut measure on Wednesday that supporters said was designed largely to keep Missouri competitive with Kansas in an ongoing border war to entice businesses with ever lower tax rates.

In a news conference in Kansas City, Nixon, a Democrat, said the tax cuts would cause serious problems for the state’s budget — while raising taxes for prescription drugs, which he opposes.

“This legislation is an ill-conceived, fiscally irresponsible experiment that would hurt our economy,” Nixon said in a statement.

Last week he added a new wrinkle, pointing out an error in the way the bill was written that would repeal a sales tax exemption for prescription medicine. That would ultimately cost consumers around $200 million annually.
