Edison International to Permanently Shut San Onofre Nuclear Plant

Last October, SoCal Edison asked the Nuclear Regulatory Commission for permission to restart the Unit 2 reactor at a reduced power level for five months.

In 2012, local citizens groups concerned about the plant's safety asked the NRC to hold formal hearings to allow the public to weigh in on Edison's request to restart the plant, before the NRC made a decision.

In a decision earlier this month, the Atomic Safety and Licensing Board, an independent panel connected to the NRC, agreed with the citizens group, Friends of the Earth, that the NRC should hold public hearings as part of its review.

On Friday, Edison said public hearings and the additional review required would add uncertainty and potential delays to a final NRC decision.

Critics of the plant applauded the decision.

"I am greatly relieved that the San Onofre nuclear plant will be closed permanently," Ms. Boxer said in a statement. "This nuclear plant had a defective redesign and could no longer operate as intended."

And that those good things then spread across the country?

This action is due to the people standing up for their rights. Even tho they were spied on and called all manner of names, they won this battle. And they did it before SONGS blew sky-high. God bless the USA!

I can say this from experience.

Ms. Boxer in not an energy expert, not even an energy amateur.

But this could be good news nonetheless if she'll allow Edison to build out some solar PV and some solar thermal and some wind, because something is going to have to run her state.

Hey Senator, wanna rethink your position on offshore wind research?
