and yet we cannot even fund Meals on Wheels during the sequester.
This is the part of the War on Terror and the NSA surveillance state that blows my mind.
"It is also worth noting that out of the 3,033 deaths attributed to terrorism since 2000, 2,996 were from 9/11. More precisely since 9/11, only 33 deaths were from Muslim Terrorists versus 150,000 deaths from homicides in America. Of the 33, all were from mass shootings that are only classified as terrorism because the shooters were Muslim. Had the the shooters been a guy with orange hair who thought he was the joker, then mysteriously it suddenly becomes not-terrorism.
That means you are 4500 times more likely to be killed by a fellow American than by a Muslim jihadist and 1830 times more likely to be killed at work by some corner cutting company than Al Qaeda. So when the next regressive idiot on Fox News or on Talk Radio starts screaming for us to invade Iran, tell them to adequately fund and enforce work place safety inspections and do something about gun control first.

The War on Terror and the surveillance state are not keeping us safer. They are primarily a way to steal oceans of money for a very tiny group of people and to put in place the mechanisms for despotism.

(36,418 posts)The example that was claimed a day or two ago was quickly debunked. I haven't seen another offered since: http://www.buzzfeed.com/bensmith/public-documents-contradict-claim-email-spying-foiled-terror
Defenders of PRISM say it stopped subway bombings. But British and American court documents suggest old-fashioned police work nabbed Zazi.

You want to talk about lack of efficacy and cost effectiveness in national security spending? The NSA domestic surveillance Program makes the F-35 procurement look like an act of genius.

(3,300 posts)If you can orchestrate a "new Pearl Harbor" you can create a new enemy - a new, horrifyingly evil, elusive enemy, willing to live in caves, cut peoples heads off, and strap explosives to their chests.
Americans have been, are, and will be lied to about the "terrorists". The only terrorists we have to fear are the ones created by the United States.

(5,198 posts)People are pissed who just got told there isn't enough in social security, while we watch social programs get cut, while we watch our infrastructure deteriorate.
We are pissed because we are being REMINDED that yet another elite group with unfettered influence on government policy, gets trillions of dollars, while we have no say in the matter.
No agency should operate without ANY oversight or ANY audit. There is no way to know if they go rogue--this in fact could be the very definition of a rogue agency.
We are pissed because we are tired of playing this game. This dog and pony show of a government who are more interested in corporate, banking and secret agencies than they are the American people.
Excuse us while we vent our anger at being told by people in our own party to stop yer whining, it is old news, and be careful not to aid and comfort the people on the right. Because, you know, people might up and vote Republican. The sad truth is, if our country united against abusive government agencies we might have influence. But we are programmed into teams of right and left, and the games must go on.
The presence of secret elite agencies was obvious after the assassinations of the 60s. We get REMINDED of them occasionally, and this is one of those times. Excuse us if it hit a nerve.
Thanks Vinnie for posting this.
