Flooding Across Central Europe
JUN 7, 2013 |
Heavy rainfall over Europe during the the past week has swollen many rivers past their flood stage, wreaking havoc unseen in decades across Germany, Austria, Switzerland, Hungary, Slovakia, Poland and the Czech Republic. At least 18 people across the region have been killed, and tens of thousands have been evacuated. In Germany, the crest of the Elbe River is now approaching the North Sea, as the swollen Danube River is surging toward the Hungarian capital of Budapest. Collected here are images from the past several days of those affected by these historic floods, even as meteorologists predict more rain over the coming weekend. [36 photos]

change is lending a helping hand, but purveyors of scientific data will be drown out by a chorus of naysayers spouting creationism.

The entire UN staff had to pack up and move on Thursday.

Now I'm back in DC, where it's just muggy as all hell.

...because it stretched along the length of those rivers. So sad. And yes, that poor kitty, and other innocents that found themselves immersed in water. Many of those towns and villages were the homes of my/your ancestors some 10-12 generations ago, I suspect. Mine, for sure. As the waters rise on this earth, they will have to move their towns to higher ground, if they insist on remaining. Oh, that one Red Cross worker in the boat reminded me of Rick Steves, and I had to do a double take to be sure it wasn't him.
