(9,110 posts)314,000,000 Americans. One percent - over 3,000,000. How many CIA personnel? And how much time devoted to 1%? And what about the actual function of this program? Is that a forgotten bi-product?

(9,214 posts)They use computers and check for key words and phrases. And yes I believe they probably have the capacity to listen to and or read all of our communications. It would only add milliseconds to the transfer times. Hear or read a key word or phrase and the communication is kicked out for further scrutiny.

Write your congressman. Call your Senator. Do what you want to do. But please don't suck all of the air out of some very important legislation that's being allowed to die because America has a brand new bone to pick.

Problem is secret courts, secret interpretations of laws, blanket authorizations.
Suppose some real bad actors get in power, some real bad shit goes down and people start to organize to protest, form a new political party, put their money into opposition, decide on plans of action, etc. Easy to cherrypick and deal with the leaders (discredit, incarcerate, etc) when their entire lives are in storage. Cherrypick their associates. Use that info to do some deep searches in the mass storage archives. Nip it in the bud. Put the freeze on, everyone looking backward, nobody trusting a soul.
Couple this with an already existing system of rendition, targeting, secret jails, secret charges, and the slow but sure fact that this system is on the way to the "homeland".
It's happened before, but the latest technology in the hands of a superpower gives it a different scope.
