One can be a gay critic of Obama without being a racist

Just once it would be nice if Obama supporters would refrain from calling gay critics of Obama racist. I am not the hugest fan of heckling political figures, and yes Michelle Obama is a political figure, but it happens from time to time. Michelle had no problem telling gays and lesbians to vote for her husband based on his record, so I fail to see why it is so out of bounds to confront her on that record. Again, I think that she should have done so in a question asked after she spoke, but the fact is the question wasn't out of bounds.

Gays get called racist by Obama supporters for three reasons. One, we had the temerity to support his opponents over him in the primaries. Now, lets recall exactly what Obama did during those primaries. His very first rally featured, as an emcee who later gave personal testimony, an ex gay Gospel singer who called gays vampires. He then gave one interview of damage control to gay media and then went over two years without doing so again. In comparison, Hillary repeatedly gave interviews to gay media and actively campaigned for LGBT voters. I am not saying no gay could rationally vote for Obama under those circumstances but to call gays racists for not doing so is deeply unfair.

Two, we supposedly treated Obama more harshly than Clinton. That is, put frankly, revisionist history. Gays repeatedly dogged Clinton over several issues. He was protested over DADT in the first months of his Presidency, he was protested over AIDS funding, he was protested over approval of AIDS drugs, his best gay friend refused to endorse him in 96 after he signed DOMA, and lastly he lost gay support in 96 and Gore lost even more in 2000. These aren't my opinion, they are verifyable facts, they exist in these things called books.

Finally we are called racists because we fail to give all the credit Obama is due for passing DADT repeal and for the other things he has done. First let me start with a bit of a mea culpa here. I thought the survey of the Armed forces over DADT was a horrible idea. I think I, and many gays, thought the results would be quite unfavorable and we were dead wrong. There Obama was right and we were wrong. But that said, on one huge thing, Obama was dead wrong. Waiting until 2011, which he wanted to do, would have doomed the repeal.

Now to the issue at hand, the executive order that LGBT people want Obama to sign. First, it should be noted that LGBT employees currently can't be discriminated against by the federal government thanks to a Clinton era executive order that Bush didn't remove. To be fair, Bush did appoint a person who refused to enforce it to the EEOC chair, but he didn't repeal the order. Obama has added the transgendered to that order. What the LGBT community wishes Obama to do is to sign an executive order banning such discrimination by federal contractors. There is history for this. FDR banned such discrimination in the 1940's by defense contractors and by the government itself. IKE kept that order. The order didn't prevent Truman and Ike from attempting to pass civil rights bills. The fact is, I am more likely to win the Boston Marathon than the Congress is to pass ENDA by 2017. In the meantime, this order would provide needed protection to a class of workers.

issue. That there is a class of citizens (LGBT) that are discriminated against on a daily basis by it's fellow citizens, it's employers because the U.S Government let's them and the U.S. Government itself.

I don't give a flying fuck if your a Democrat or a republican if you condone the broken promises by this Administration about ENDA in part of the equation you ARE NOT the solution, you ARE part of the problem.

Discrimination is wrong there is no wrong time to fight against it, this Administration most of all should know that. If it had not been for all those people back in the 60's we would not have the President we have today. It's sick, it's disgusting and it turns my stomach to see how some have acted over this.

I will Leave you with this in her own words "Why I confronted the first lady".

3. I am always wary of (my, potentially) pitting one group in the Democratic coalition against another

I can agree with the title of the thread as it is, agree with it more leaving out the word "Gay." I myself supported Hillary in '08 and went through these phases: 1) taken off guard by OBAMA's candidacy. 2) thought he was empty rhetoric, was STAGGERED to hear him make literally a hundred promises per speech. 3) Thought his original core followers were YOUNG shallow kids. 4) Realized how he (his staff?) outcampaigned and out managed Hillary, became disillusioned by her tick-tack, INSIDE the box campaign and throwing millions on insider p.r. hacks. 5) Committed wholly to OBAMA when Hillary's loss was undeniable. 6) I have solidified into being way more of a supporter of his, while I have seen MANY of his original supporters fall away or run away.

That said, I'm heading toward division here. After 40 yrs and being a veteran I still remember an American History class where the prof described how Civil War vets had been granted lots of bennies to the tune of hundreds of acres of free land in the West, and how letters to the editor started cropping up (in the 1880s) to the tune of, "The veterans have received ENOUGH!"

In NO way do I propose or subscribe to any idea that any discriminated group can have TOO MUCH or even enough. But in the former supporters of different groups falling away, the common theme is that they have not gotten ANYTHING in fulfillment of the promises OBAMA made to them. What have Hispanics gotten? What have Blacks gotten beyond the inspiration. What have unions gotten? Young women HAVE gotten critical placements in the nominations.

And my reaction to the heckler of Michelle's was: My gawd, what group in the coalition has gotten more, starting with Bill CLINTON whose very first act was DADT that was at that time a huge step to take. Has OBAMA's "evolution" dragged on forever, yes. Well, the tiny little Dream Act took him forever, too, and it was tiny.

My current stage of where I'm at with OBAMA is, thanks for small favors. I'm grateful he hasn't selfishly put personal scandals (Bill CLINTON) ahead of working for the Coalition's agenda items. I definitely believe Rethug obstructionism is totally real, but don't use it as an excuse for him. I'm grateful for the SCotUS appointments.

This screed is meant to address the O.P.'s focus of holding his (or any one candidate/office holder) UNRELENTINGLY to the fire. I know I can count on a non-flaming reaction here, or I wouldn't have left myself open like this.

4. I think Hispanics have quite a lot to complain about frankly

He did deliver on cabinent positions for them and his belated change in how deportations are done was also helpful but frankly they have quite a lot to complain about. I don't blame him for the unions. That is the anti union southern Senators fault combined with needed 60 votes. He did go to bat with the NLRB appointees it should be noted.

that anyone criticizing our President is branded a "racist."

What the Hell? It is our duty as Americans to criticize the Government
when it is stepping on it's dick.

POTUS does not translate as "king."

ANY public servant who is screwing up and/or screwing us over is GOING
to be criticized by me, regardless of who they are or what they look like.

"Racist" my ass.

Good thread, OP.
