Salvation Army says “Gays Need to Be Put to Death”

Christmas, it is the time of the year for holiday shopping, and also hearing the bell ringers for the Salvation Army collection donations. Those donations provide Christmas dinners, clothing, and Christmas toys for children in need. The charity collects millions of dollars in donations every year, and they distribute it to needy families, seniors, and the homeless in keeping with the spirit of the holiday season.

The Salvation Army has expressed their Christian beliefs in the past, stating that they do not accept the LGBTQ lifestyle, nor do they stand up for gay marriage. Salvation Army went on record recently, stating that LGBTQ parents should be put to death as the bible instructs. Major Andrew Craibe, a Salvation Army Media Relations Director, went on public radio hosted by journalist Serena Ryan, to discuss a recent call by LGBTQ parents for a boycott of the nonprofit for its anti-gay policies and beliefs.

Ryan questioned Craibe about Salvation Story: Salvationist Handbook of Doctrine, the manual used to train Salvation Army “soldiers” and members. Several chapters refer to the sin of homosexuality, including a section that cites Romans 1:18-32, which includes a admonition that homosexuals “deserved to die”;

Ryan: According to the Salvation Army gay parents deserve death. How do you respond to that, as part of your doctrine?”

“Craibe: Well, that’s a part of our belief system.”

Ryan: So they should die.”

“Craibe: You know, we have an alignment to the Scriptures, but that’s our belief.”

[font color="navy" face="Verdana"]She told me that the Salvation Army's sole purpose is "to bring souls to Jesus, and everything else is an afterthought."

So none of the "charity" they perform is being done out of any love for fellow human beings or even because Jesus commanded it. It's being done purely to get close enough to proselytize a captive audience.

I kind of think Jesus would not approve. I can't remember any instance in which he demanded allegiance before bread.

Just handed me coffee and bagel during a blackout. I still remember them filling a truck with water to take down to Ground Zero. Water, not Bibles.

I've gotten fantastic clothes and housewares from their thrift store in Chelsea.

Many of you believe things I find appalling and vice versa. What matters to me is what you DO.

When there was need, the Salvation Army in New York was ALWAYS there and never did they bother with religion or sexual orientation. Just need.

They have buildings on 14th Street, the dividing line between West Village/Chelsea. I suspect they know there are homosexuals nearby.

[font color="navy" face="Verdana"]To say nothing of different people. During the post-911 scene you describe, they were probably just too busy to preach. It might have been different in the actual shelters and soup kitchens during more normal times.

All I know in this instance is what an actual member told me was the case when she was a fairly high-ranking officer in a California chapter or regiment or whatever they call local organizations. That's not me just "believing" something with no basis, it's first-hand testimony from a member.

Any group that does charitable work gets credit for those good deeds, but motivation and discrimination do count. For the SA to say that a certain group of people they disapprove of should be denied equal opportunity and should die is not something I can support. Even bigots do some charitable work, but I'll choose other organizations to donate to.

As a kid I always looked forward to hearing the lady who rang out the bell in front of the shopping centers near my house during Christmas time. I would love to put a buck in the plate. I also used to go to SA day camp during the summers as well. I used to have a high opinion of them until I learned of their bigoted anti-LGBT opinions.

I already have been boycotting them for personal reasons.

Many years back, I had some old furniture to donate to them and left it out in my driveway for them to pick up. They turned it down, and I had to put it in my garage for the night and call Goodwill to take it instead later. While I kept the furniture in the garage, I parked my car outside in the driveway for a few days and while I did that my car got stolen from my driveway then. Goodwill of course took my furniture next day with no problems, and have gotten my business ever since.

So too many reasons now for me to ever go back to them again now. Thanks for helping me seal the deal now.

At the time she was a single mother raising 2 girls and was highly dependent on the small salary she got from them. She interviewed people who were looking for help and was good at her job. A man who worked there became interested in her and they even went out on a few dates (even though she prefers women.) She and the man stopped seeing each other and not long after she was mysteriously fired (she said "laid off" but lets be honest). I have always believed it was because they found out that she was a lesbian.

28. As far as I can see, they are condemned by their own doctrine
Tue Jun 11, 2013, 05:17 PM
Jun 2013

and this despite the good works of their foot soldiers - which is a lot of good work.

From the "Salvationist" web site

We believe that the Scriptures of the Old and New Testaments were given by inspiration of God, and that they only constitute the Divine rule of Christian faith and practice.
No wiggle room there Old and New Testaments with all the conflicts and contradictions and all of the condemnations of practices the compilers of that book found distasteful.

We believe that there is only one God, who is infinitely perfect, the Creator, Preserver, and Governor of all things, and who is the only proper object of religious worship.
Fair enough, personally I find this description of tyranny quite disturbing, not to say contradicted by the next 2 elements of this profession of faith.

We believe that there are three persons in the Godhead-the Father, the Son and the Holy Ghost, undivided in essence and co-equal in power and glory.
And the White Queen believed three impossible things before breakfast

We believe that in the person of Jesus Christ the Divine and human natures are united, so that He is truly and properly God and truly and properly man.
Only 2 impossible things here.

We believe that our first parents were created in a state of innocency, but by their disobedience they lost their purity and happiness, and that in consequence of their fall all men have become sinners, totally depraved, and as such are justly exposed to the wrath of God.
OK, so by this argument what my ancestors did has condemned me unless I have the luck to have been introduced to Christianity - which is hard luck on all those non-Europeans throughout the ages who never heard of Jesus (not his real name).

We believe that the Lord Jesus Christ has by His suffering and death made an atonement for the whole world so that whosoever will may be saved.
Except those who never heard of him and who have never heard of the Bible.

We believe that repentance towards God, faith in our Lord Jesus Christ, and regeneration by the Holy Spirit, are necessary to salvation.
and if you have never heard of Him let alone this doctrine, what happens then?

We believe that we are justified by grace through faith in our Lord Jesus Christ and that he that believeth hath the witness in himself.
This seems to be a "Get out of Jail (Hell) Free" card apart from all the other nonsense.

We believe that continuance in a state of salvation depends upon continued obedient faith in Christ.
and if you have never had the chance to find the rules of this game, what then?

We believe that it is the privilege of all believers to be wholly sanctified, and that their whole spirit and soul and body may be preserved blameless unto the coming of our Lord Jesus Christ.
Is it only the Salvationists particular breed of faith that sanctifies you? Oh, and this "preservation of the body" lark seems a completely unrelated to reality - what happens to those who are cremated?

We believe in the immortality of the soul; in the resurrection of the body; in the general judgment at the end of the world; in the eternal happiness of the righteous; and in the endless punishment of the wicked.
Well the immortality of the soul is nice, but what is a soul? The resurrection of the body is not a good idea considering how ill designed our bodies are and what about the naughty bits and the dirty bits, are they reformed as well? also there is this bit about the wicked for, as far as I can see the wicked are those who do not follow this doctrine.

It's a reference to converts in Rome who reverted back to their polytheistic roots -- and all those kick-ass Roman orgies that came along with it. Unnatural sexual desires (which covers a lot of ground up to and including the old Zeta-Jones) were only part of the object of God's fury.

Funny how these SA people ignored the laundry list of sins that the Apostle Paul enumerates ("unrighteousness, fornication, wickedness, covetousness, maliciousness; full of envy, murder, debate, deceit, malignity; whisperers, Backbiters, haters of God, despiteful, proud, boasters, inventors of evil things, disobedient to parents, without understanding, covenant-breakers, without natural affection, implacable, unmerciful&quot and focused on homosexuality.

I've heard this kind of response many times. Once, here in the Bay Area, Ross McGowan was interviewing a local homophobic preacher and asked him whether he agreed that gays should be put to death and the preacher kept replying "That's what the Bible says." The interviewer gave him several chances to explain or qualify but that's the only answer he gave.

"We have an alignment with the scriptures:" They are all cowards because they're too terrified to put what the Bible says into exact words. They won't even answer yes or no to the question of whether they agree gays should be put to death. It's always some weasely phrase about how they believe the Bible is literal and always true.
