...not only at DU but all over the media and internet channels, talking, often in depth, about the various implications of the surveillance state.

That has never happened before.

Sure some people are trying to make it about Snowden. And certainly, he will be pursued legally. So there is a part of this story that will be about him.

But the bottom line for me is that he actually seems to have succeeded in getting a serious dialog going about that stuff. So saying he should have done it some other way... well the way he chose to do it seems pretty damned effective so far.

The focus, for whatever reason would have stayed on the NSA if he remained hidden
