Senate plays dirty to put squeeze on abortion clinics

Here is something to keep in mind now that the Ohio Senate has passed its version of the state budget bill, complete with an amendment that bans public hospitals from making “transfer agreements” with abortion clinics.

In the rare instance that a woman suffers serious complications from an abortion, hospitals are obligated under federal law to treat her — with or without a “transfer agreement.” This federal law was advanced not by pro-choice activists, but by those who noticed low-income people were dying because hospitals didn’t find it profitable to treat them.

The people who brought you this budget amendment are fully aware that banning transfer agreements won’t prevent hospitals from accepting patients from abortion clinics if their lives are in danger; but it does make things harder on the clinics, which is, of course, the goal.

If you agree that legislators should stop playing political games at our expense, please support our work with a contribution to the ACLU of Ohio. These contributions are powerful aids in our legislative work, as we fight back against these types of shady tactics.

Sincerely,

Christine Link
Executive Director
ACLU of Ohio

it illegal to cross state lines to get a legal abortion elsewhere? I would ask what is wrong with these people, but we know the answer.
