Here is something to keep in mind now that the Ohio Senate has passed its version of the state budget bill, complete with an amendment that bans public hospitals from making transfer agreements with abortion clinics.
In the rare instance that a woman suffers serious complications from an abortion, hospitals are obligated under federal law to treat her with or without a transfer agreement. This federal law was advanced not by pro-choice activists, but by those who noticed low-income people were dying because hospitals didnt find it profitable to treat them.
The people who brought you this budget amendment are fully aware that banning transfer agreements wont prevent hospitals from accepting patients from abortion clinics if their lives are in danger; but it does make things harder on the clinics, which is, of course, the goal.
