Obama is going to lose young people if he doesn't reverse at least some of his surveillance policies

"The drop in Obama's support is fueled by a dramatic 17-point decline over the past month among people under 30, who, along with black Americans, had been the most loyal part of the Obama coalition," says CNN Polling Director Keating Holland.

Six in 10 disapprove of how Obama is handling government surveillance of U.S. citizens, which is higher than the 52% who disapproved of George W. Bush on the same issue in 2006, when government surveillance was also in the headlines.

http://politicalticker.blogs.cnn.com/2013/06/17/cnn-poll-obama-approval-falls-amid-controversies/

Who is carrying around all the devices that are being used to monitor us? Which group probably is a bit riskier in their activities from sexting to recreational drug use?

If we allow this to continue it will be a legacy of the Democratic Party who expanded the collection of data beyond Dick Cheney's wildest dreams.

they vote dem anyway, and if they are t'd off over spying they're not gonna vote pub. one thing i've noticed since this all began is that many people don't actually care about the issues, just what team they're on. We know that approval/disapproval of surveillance techniques have completely flipped flopped by people in both parties, dems now okay with it and pubs against it. So they'll vote for dems cuz they're democrats, they don't really care about the issues in earnest (hence all the snowden bashing here). Some young voters do actually care, but i don't think all that many.

And if they try to manufacture a scandal as a pretext they're going to be pummelled at the polls.
Boehner faces a bigger threat to his seat from a Dem than from a Repuke. The GOP is losing patience with the teabaggers, and their actual power (what little they had) is waning. All they are is a lot of screaching, feces-flinging, monkeys...they make a lot of noise, but don't do anything. They aren't capable of mounting a challange to Boehner.

Mon Jun 17, 2013, 07:52 PM
Jun 2013

Which puts us at the midterm campaigns next summer. Then, after the election, the repukes have to find a plausible reason to impeach Biden, and then a year of hearings to impeach him. That puts us right at the beginning of the '16 General Election campaigns. If their reason to impeach Biden was shakey, voters will hammer them at polls. I don't think GOP is conceding '16 at this point. Although they don't have a strong candidate at this time, one could emerge by then. Obama was still a relative nobody back in summer of '05.

Jun 2013

And in 2004, I myself was wearing a President Obama 2004 button(2004, along with 2008 and 2012).

Reason for them to also impeach Biden? What reason did they have to waste time on impeaching Bill Clinton(who today is far more popular than ever). If they own 4 branches, they can do whatever they want.

BTW, if they were to somehow do it, I change my pick for VP to Michelle Obama, and if it was Hillary/Michelle, it will be 538-0 in 2016.

But make no mistake, they wouldn't let Biden if he also wasn't, pick a VP, so it would remain open til after the 2016 race.

(last thing they would do is let Biden pick say Hillary)

If it took them 6 months to gin up an excuse to impeach Biden, thats summer of 15. Then a year of investigations and impeachment hears puts us at summer 16. Right before conventions. If they didn't have an airtight case, voters will thrash them at polls in fall 16 GE. Too risky.
Even if evidence surfaces Obama abused power in NSA surveillence, I don't think repukes will impeach. They will want to keep that mechanism in place for a hopeful repuke president. Thats why Bill is supporting it.

the debate makes it seem like people forget it actually happened. And they remember that there was a great period in 1992 to 2000 and who was in office then.

Ron Paul voted FOR Afghanastan.

America loved FDR and Lincoln and Lincoln ran for re-election AFTER doing what he did, meaning the public ratified what he did.

BTW, no one pays attention to anything in the summer anyhow so all people are doing is saying their view against the president,
but no one is listening.

BECAUSE President Obama's TRUE supporters don't listen to the alt-media people and the Ron Paul groupies who they know have been attempting one smear after another.

And, btw, if the law should change, the President would get 100% of the credit when people come time to pick
Hillary or Jeb.

So it's just talking points against the President, but this President is not Jimmy Carter and the same old smears by the same old
people 100 times, people stopped paying attention after the Rev. Wright and the Birthers, which resonated NOT at all with the voters
that mattered.

And, the secret Democratic weapon is this-
people who say, aw, we should have voted for Hillary, well in 2016, they will.

and HIllary and Obama are on the same team. That is 95% of the democratic party.

It would be a shame if protest voters though stopped the house from being democratic.

Exactly the same way this sort of thing played out last time.

The Democrats will take a drubbing next year, and the "centrists" will blame liberals. They'll say the left-- pardon me-- The Left (that's much more ominous) abandoned the Democrats and that the electoral disaster is proof that the party should disregard liberals in the future since they're fickle an inconstant.

When it eventually turns out that liberals voted in strong numbers, and it was the so-called centrists who abandoned the party, they'll say that we obviously have to disregard liberal complaints next time and appeal more to moderates.

The only mainstream media I pay any attention to is Chris Hayes and Rachel Maddow who've done a reasonable job. And there's also been good coverage internationally.

The reality may have to be dealt with gradually, as it does when a shock wave goes through the populace. Maybe even Snowden needs to realize that. Whole lotta denial out there. But the genie is out of the bottle and finally people are discussing this.

Any evidence of law-breaking (past or present)? You want to have a debate about surveillance and curtailing some of these data collection operations, fine. You want to have Congress alter or abolish some of them, fine. But what do you expect Dems to do in terms of "holding him accountable"? Appoint a special prosecutor? Hold impeachment hearings? What? AFAIK he's not been accused of nor implicated in any law-breaking. The NSA programs are LEGAL. Loathsome as they may be to some of us.

These problems didn't even start under President Obama, so why is he being dumped on over this? That's what I don't get. This was passed by Congress and signed into law under Bush/Cheney as I recall back in 2006-2007.

There are more than one whistle-blowers, all describe activities that are probably not legal. Hell, even the court has ruled some activity illegal, a decision the WH is still trying to block from the public. Over 60% of the public think the surveillence has gone too far. Certainly it started before Obama, but he doubled down on it...litterally...budget has doubled since he took office. And has this been used for political purposes...spying on Occupy, Keystone protestors, etc? I think the public is entitled to candid answers, and if Obama won't provide them, then his feet need to be held to the fire.

the dem party actually stays to the left, or that there is even part of the dem party that will continue to stand against bush's FISA, Patriot act, etc. Which now of course, is no longer something the dem party concerns itself with. The party will be fine no matter what, there's only 2 viable parties, where are people gonna go, and they know that and that's why they can get away with this cr-p. It's our rights that will be lost, we the people will lose, but the parties will be just fine.

that's why i don't understand the numbers of people here not only defend the nsa but spend time vilifying the mssger, even to the point of pushing back on people who question and disapprove of surveillance tactics, all in order to protect the admin and the party. What are people thinking..the party has billions of dollars, has millions and millions of strictly partisan voters, mass media, have incredible amounts of power... it's we the people, and the issues that will suffer if people do not hold the admin (and that goes for any admin) responsible.

have one thing in common: People moved on, and they'll move on from this. The whole country wanted watered down gun control, but we didn't get it, and now it's like Newtown never happened. The media had us all salivating for minute to minute coverage of the Boston bombings, and you hear nothing about it these days. A few weeks in politics is a lifetime. There'll be new scandals/news events to replace the old ones. Wash. Rinse. Repeat. Bank on it!

The only ones wishing this story would last for a couple of years is the firebaggers. Good luck with that.

the left has left the Democratic party over and over. It's like the same people leave the party over and over. The same people withdraw from supporting President Obama over and over. When will they really leave?

If you're talking about the DU, you'll have to convince me that they ever came. It's really hard to tell where you're logging into these days, what with the "Impeach Obama" ads running at the top of the homepage.

Somehow, it didn't effect how I've voted since.

I didn't realize that the only interests young people (I'm assuming 'voters') have is sexting and recreational drug use. That's a mighty broad brush you're painting them with. TBH, the young people I know (kids of friends and even some adults) that are concerned with sexting and drug use to the extent that privacy would be a concern don't have a clue what is happening in the real world...or in front of their own house.

whistleblowers as "traitors" to be hounded and imprisoned.

We're making headway exactly because of how ugly Republicans got with this stuff. We can't sell a watered down version of the same garbage they were selling.

We can do better than this, and we have to do so.

What they are is in favor of pleasing their Bushfamilyinc members by culling voters by saying they are.

After all, Texas and Kentucky have two of the harshest penalties for drugs of any state.
Even Willie Nelson, the Emperor of Austin Texas has been arrested many times for drugs.

If you do a poll you will find that most people under 40 will think Snowden is a hero. Most people over 50 will think he's a traitor. It's a generational thing. The older generation is pro-establishment and pro-government.

The generation Y's and millennials are anti-establishment. They are socially liberal and even somewhat libertarian with their "live and let live" philosophy. They are not against regulation of industry, but they dont believe the government has any business being involved in their private life.

Right now they tend to vote Democratic because they have more in common with Democrats. But if the Democrats keep favoring the state and corporations over the people, these voters wont be there in 2016.

of course, the ones that pick the winning football team each year, might say they are not going to vote,
however, I don't believe they ever were supporters in the first place.

80-20 is coming, and nothing will stop it.

BTW-where are the pictures of Rand and Ron smoking pot? (with inhaling it). I have never seen one.
I don't believe either is actually for it whatsoever. Its just to solicit funds and voters.

What I see happening is this being their first big political experience, and it is turning out really bad. Voting just isn't worth the effort when no matter who you vote for you get republican policies.

I don't think you can generalize about the over-50 crowd being pro-establishment--they are the 60s children. And I work with Y's and millennials who are really conservative.

CNN Poll: Majority give Snowden thumbs down

A CNN/ORC International survey released Monday morning indicates that 52% of the public disapproves of Edward Snowden's actions, with 44% saying they approve of the leaks by the former government contractor who worked for the National Security Agency.

<...>

"Younger Americans are less likely than older Americans to call for the U.S. government to prosecute Snowden," says CNN Polling Director Keating Holland. "More than half of Americans over the age of 34 think Snowden should be extradited and prosecuted, but younger Americans are evenly divided. There are no major age differences on the question of whether Americans approve of Snowden's actions, so it seems that there is a generation gap on punishment, but not on the leaks themselves."

As you may know, details of the government collection of phone records and internet data were revealed when a former government contractor named Edward Snowden leaked classified information about those government programs to two newspapers. Do you approve or disapprove of Snowden's actions?

18 to 34

Approve: 45 percent
Disapprove: 52 percent

Do you think the U.S. government should or should not attempt to bring Snowden back to this country and prosecute him for leaking that information?

All

Should 54 percent
Should not 42 percent

18 to 34

Should 49 percent
Should not 48 percent

He lost those young people in 2010 too and was losing them in 2012, yet somehow he did not lose in 2012. But the media has frequently assured us that the latest poutrage has lost him their support.

So maybe it's a media orchestrated thing. They figured it worked in 2010.

I had such great hopes for Mr. Obama. I thought perhaps we had another FDR. He is certainly better than the alternative, but every time he rolls over he gives the right a chance to get back in the White House. And we all know what that means unless we can hold out until the demographics kill the regressive republican party...

I can't believe how much shit he posts about himself to impress his peers. He is so enamor with himself and getting photos with other connected people.

I suppose they won't come out for the mid-terms again either.
