It is a little sad and a bit uncomfortable...

...to think that we are now living in a national security state. We think we have given up just a little freedom so the state could keep us secure. But we have given up a lot more than we will ever know, in my opinion. We thought we were free...

But you can get in your car and drive across the country if you want. Perhaps you will rent a car and stay in the Comfort Inn that is close to the Interstate? Perhaps you will pay with your credit card?

Also, you will take your cell phone so you can call ahead to let everyone know you are OK. The state will know where you are by GPS but your family will not know unless you call them.

Of course, you have to go thru several lights to get to the Interstate. And on almost every light pole is a traffic light, that can zoom in on your license plate. Also, you have to stop and get gas, which you pay with a gas card.

And when you drive a full day and stop at the Comfort Inn, they pull you up on the computer from your stop a couple of years ago. Would you like the non-smoking room this time? Would you like to use the same credit card?

But the state only uses the technology that is available to them. If they have the means to use technology, they will find a way to use it. That is just the nature of government. But, in the process, we lose just a little more freedom and anonymity.

I thought we were living in a 'police state'.

I can't keep up with all of this - is there a Paranoids' Newsletter I can subscribe to, just so I know what I'm supposed to freak out about in each 24-hour period?

-- the cost of the program at a time when the Republicans (Hooverites) are putting the pressure on for cuts to the most vulnerable; &

-- due to the extraordinary scope of the program, I suspect that it's going to be used against consumers on behalf of corporations.
