Paula Deen is no stranger to controversy, but new allegations of racism leveled against the Southern chef may shock even those who have followed her troubles most closely.
The National Enquirer claims to have acquired a video of a deposition in which Deen admits to using the N-word and making racist and anti-semitic jokes. She also allegedly describes her interest in hiring black waiters dressed to look like "slaves" at a wedding.
The deposition, which was reportedly held on May 17, took place as part of a court case brought forth by former Paula Deen Enterprises employee Lisa Jackson against Deen and her brother, Earl Bubba Hiers. Jackson alleges several instances of sexual and racial workplace discrimination. ....................(more)

(1,379 posts)What about her two sons shows? Any other network (as shown in the recent past on ESPN) would at a minimum place her on leave. As for her sons, I don't think they are guilty, but their shows are "spin offs" of Paula's show (Not my Mommas Meals) which features her on every episode.

(12,296 posts)I've given up on that channel, I so despise Guido Fieri & he's on - marathons - 5 nights a week.

(17,174 posts)And since Adam Richman ("Man v. Food" has pretty much retired from doing challenges, and Andrew Zimmern keeps trying to convince me that pickled pomeranian feces with grilled possum pecker are really pretty good, really they are, I don't even look to the Travel Channel much anymore for handy helpful hints.

"Oh that's the best part! try it!"
I laughed a good long while before I threw up in my mouth a little.

(12,296 posts)All he does is go from "quaint" restaurant to restaurant, harassing the owners/chefs and making stupid jokes (and probably stealing recipes).
He watches them cook some of their 'signature' dishes and then we get to watch him stuff his face on camera.
He's a caricature ... bleached blond spiky hair, armbands, sunglasses stuck on the back of his head, tacky man-jewelry ... and I've never even seen him boil water.

(12,296 posts).... so the managers think people actually like his show, or are too lazy to give viewers real, current programming anymore.
If you notice, the majority of the DDD's are at least a couple years old.

Can't say I'm sorry to see her dragged into the light of day.

(169 posts)but whites in the south talk about blacks when they aren't around. And that's the way they talk about them. I've experienced it, in a store when another white customer makes a comment about a black customer who has just left the store, they think you are "in on it" and agree because you share the same skin color. I always cringe.

I've experienced it. And cringed.

(3,247 posts)in my observation. Have lived in OH, MI, LA, and AL and heard more n-words in all of them than here in VA. Not that the structure of white privilege is much different, but norms of civility are more stringent, thank God. And I do notice the word since more than half my extended family is black. Or, maybe I look just racially ambiguous enough to give pause to hate speech, and people here are more sensitive to such subtleties, dunno.
Deen seems the type to throw it around freely.

(14,549 posts)I see this a lot with people who are used to being in control. Mayor Bloomberg is famous for this kind of thing at press conferences:
Deen: My brother and I have had conversations. My brother is not a bad person. Do humans behave inappropriately? At times, yes. I don't know one person that has not. My brother is a good man. Have we told jokes? Have we said things that we should not have said, that -- yes, we all have. We all have done that, every one of us.

(6,665 posts)In the mid 90s when I was teaching in a big city school I was appalled at the widespread use of the word. Initially I contacted parents and referred matters to the principal, but I seemed to be the only one worried about it. I finally just gave up and resolved to just not use the word myself unless I was talking about the use of the word.
