Top Republican: Obama’s climate change plan ‘absolutely crazy’

The top Republican on Capitol Hill on Thursday called the Obama administration’s possible plan for reining in greenhouse gas emissions “absolutely crazy.”

In a wide-ranging news conference, House Speaker John Boehner objected to the possibility that the Environmental Protection Agency might soon move to impose limits on the heat-trapping emissions from the nation’s existing power plants — not just newly built facilities.

“I think this is absolutely crazy,” Boehner said. “Why would you want to increase the cost of energy and kill more American jobs at a time when the American people are still asking the question, where are the jobs?”

Top White House energy adviser Heather Zichal signaled new emissions rules could be coming soon during a forum on climate change Wednesday. Though she did not outline specifics, Zichal reiterated President Barack Obama’s state-of-the-union pledge to use his executive powers to combat climate change, including the EPA’s authority to regulate emissions under the Clean Air Act.
