I hoping the story goes further and opens more doors on what kind of scumbags that are in the spy bizz.

I am having trouble imagining that Americans can't see some value in keeping that confidential.

How idealistic is it to reveal our doings to an authoritarian government in brutal competition with us?

How does that help? Us? the World? I don't think it does.

The obvious answer is: It strengthens China's hand.

Many DUers back Snowden for clarifying what the NSA is up to, but I've seen no comments glorifying his giving away (valid) security secrets.

Due to Snowden's speaking out, I've since learned that, while bartering (or whittling down) social security & other vital programs, our leaders in Washington are fine with spending $billions-plus on NSA facilities/technology/sub-contractors. I learned about the newly-constructed NSA headquarters in Utah that we weren't supposed to know about, which is 1M square feet & will cost millions to run & maintain. And they're close to approving $billions for building a state-of-the-art border-patrol fence, an appeasement for the right-wing nut-jobs in order to pass the immigration bill.

I'm not as concerned about strengthening China's hand as I am about what is being done to the people in the U.S.

If he was going to commit all of these felonies and try to make The USA look like shit then he should have done it back when Bush was still in office.

true that this is one of the nastier kerfuffle's going.

Mainly I think it has to do with the fact we don't know what's really going on.

Thus, anyone with an opinion gets room to maneuver he he

Could have fooled me! Hasn't the US govt been busted violating the privacy of not only its own citizens, but those of other countries and now the party faithful who so virulently opposed the Patriot Act are now making it all about personalities and not what was actually leaked?

going on between the US and China or many other things.

Don't kid yourself that this is all about privacy when the nsa info gathering has been known about for almost a decade.
Plus, Snowden made it all about himself, he could have leaked his info via Greenwald but that would lack drama. Plus,
the Chinese wouldn't have him over there to make a nation wide freakout over how great he is..

What I'm interested in is the violation of privacy of US citizens and those in other countries. It's surely far more boring in the long run, but so much more consistent to my values than being someone who opposed the Patriot Act and then turns round and ignores this in the rush to throw around as much gossip as possible about the person who leaked the information...

And what would I know about international relations?

and is something proven and concrete

Because NO right has been taken away as we are freely conversing on an international board,
and people post all their info, warts and all on facebook now for a decade.

It is just hyperbole

HOWEVER, 82 people a day have ALL their rights taken away when they are shot with a gun and bullet
That is REAL

Wow, imagine that James Bond was a SPY and a cold blooded killer at that. Who would have thunk it?

If one values the rights of people, why isn't 100% of the people (of course, not the BushPaulfamilyinc as they don't), but
why not reinterpret the 2nd to show that indeed militia=national guard and state and local police and NOT zimmy in Florida.

makes no sense to me.

After all, a gun and bullet take away 100% of every single right there is if that person is shot and killed.

As Ben Franklin said "AN ounce of prevention is worth a pound of cure"
