Some of these leaks were turned over to the Guardian and also, the Washington Post. They made the decision to report them. The Washington Post and The Guardian are responsible for whatever is printed in their papers. Glenn Greenwald worked for the Guardian. They made the decision to print his story, some editor or newspaper owner. Otherwise, the stories would never have ended up in their newspaper. We can blame Greenwald and Snowden but blame does not stop there, if we wish to place blame?

(10,751 posts)...when we read posts claiming Snowden has no documents to back up his assertions.
Do people really think that the Washington Post and the Guardian will post major news stories like this without any verification?
Really?

(110,950 posts)The government would claim. If they are stupid enough to get in a debate about our First Amendment Rights. Of course, the newspapers have more information. They buy their ink by the barrel, also.

(10,751 posts)...and the Washington Post to vet their sources, a helluva lot more than I trust random posters on DU who claim that Snowden "has not provided documents backing up his assertions". That was the point I was trying to make.
That does not, by the way, mean that I accept anything they publish as gospel. It's all a matter of degree. But these are large and reputable newspapers, and in reporting this story they are going against the vested interests of their respective governments, so it would seem to be in their best interests to ensure the accuracy of what they are reporting.

I'm not sure what point you are trying to make here.

(56,582 posts)That's the only thing I could see that could be a legal problem for him (and even then I really doubt the government would want to stir up that shitstorm -- right now they're happy having most of the media against him and that would stop real quick if they prosecuted him). Printing classified documents you weren't read in on isn't a crime.
