For the third time this year, a family in Tennessee has accidentally shot their own baby.

GunFAIL XXIII by David Waldman

(snip)

Otherwise, it's your usual assortment of mishaps, stupidity, bad luck, poor judgment, lack of attention to safety rules, etc. It was a week of threes, though. Three fellow patriots exercised their right to override their neighbors' decisions about guns on their property, liberating them from the projectile-free lifestyle by sheer force of American exceptionalism. Three more patriots gave their cold, dead hands a rest, leaving their guns behind in areas where well-regulated militias were sure to put them to the most efficient use, specifically, underneath a hotel room mattress, and in the restrooms of a movie theater and a salad bar-less Applebees. Still three more of our friends shot themselves cleaning and/or fixing loaded weapons, while one more did so while examining a gun he was considering buying. No word on the "you break it, you bought it" policy there. Three law enforcement officers experienced GunFAILs this week, though only one officer actually shot herself. And we count three wounds resulting from target shooting accidents this week, as well.

Oh, yes. And this week also marks the third time this year that a family in Tennessee has accidentally shot their own baby.

In the category of singular events this week, just one identified killing of a family member mistaken for an intruder, and just one child shot in the neck by celebratory gunfire following the conclusion of the NBA Finals.

Now, without further ado, this week's compilation, below the fold....

1. Deaths of thousands of kids each year is the only 'tax' the RW gun nuts are happy to pay

to live in this country where background checks for guns are not required 100% of the time.

2. What, the same family? Same baby?

Who writes this shit?

I wish journalists would take a breath as they write the headlines, or at least run them by a neutral observer for a clarity check.

Better:

For third time this year in the state of Tennessee, an infant was shot in the family's home.

Or some such.

Tragic story, really. If families are going to have guns, they should have to have safes/gun locks, take classes, and educational gun safety programs in schools would be helpful, too.

Terrible headline. I thought one poor baby had been shot 3 times. I would've thought twice would bring protective services into it.

3. Imagine how many they would have killed if the Spurs won.

I don't understand this celebratory gunfire. I don't understand why women mate with men who are stupid enough to kill their own children they proclaim to love.

Won't anyone think of the children and arm them!

23. Interestingly, there are FEWER American gun owners than two decades ago ...

... but there are MORE guns in America.

And many MORE pollies who flee before the forces of the National Assault Rifle Association.

I quit the NRA when it became the latter (NARA), though still do have at least half-a-dozen firearms have never shot anyone - even though I live in Texas.

Guns don't kill people, deranged idiots who should not be allowed to own a gun kill people. All guns should be registered, no civilian rifle or automatic pistol should have more than a 3 (or 5 - pick a number) round mag, no firearm should be sold to anyone who cannot pass both a mental health and a criminal background check, no firearm should be sold to anyone who has not passed a basic firearms safety course.

This is not 1813.

12. They suggested putting a gun safe in the kids room

on the assumption that the parents would rush to their kids room anyway in the case of an intruder.

While I think it is a dumb idea, I don't understand why you consider it dangerous. I though gun safes were kid proof?

14. Only if the parent is never distracted and ALWAYS closes - AND LOCKS the safe

before leaving the room. Sadly, that doesn't always happen. Especially in a kid's room. I can personally attest: it's AWFULLY easy to get distracted upon entering.

what I find interesting is that you don't thinks gun safes are child proof. I thought gun safes were absolutely needed to save lives. What difference does it make where they are?

20. Who knew it was National A.S.K. Day Friday?

"ASK (Asking Saves Kids)

“Is there a gun where your child plays?” Asking this simple question is an important step every parent can take to help their kids stay safe.

About 1/3 of homes with kids have guns, many left unlocked or loaded. Just talking to your child about the dangers of firearms is not enough. Children are naturally curious. If a gun is accessible in someone’s home, there is a good chance a child will find it and play with it. Countless tragedies have occurred when kids found guns that parents thought were well hidden or safely stored.

ASK was created in collaboration with the American Academy of Pediatrics.

Click here to read tips to make asking easier."

41. you're welcome. Seems like a no brainer. A police officer hired to monitor a family visit . . .

. . . in the park for an outing, apparently owing to violence in the home, has to has to be there to monitor them playing with their children. We (Moms Demand Action) were there Saturday with our ASK literature and the policeman wanted to know about why we were there. He thought that ASK sounded like good sense. We're using the words "gun sense" instead of "gun control". I wonder if it might be helpful to get the police to coordinate with MDA. It takes a lot of money to get visibility in the community. Just promoting on the Internet doesn't actually reach those who need to be reached.

Btw, only one other person approached our table. One can't go up and solicit in a public park. They had a face painter and balloons, but practically no parents. It's tough going. They need idea people I'm thinking.

I almost couldn't laugh at it.

If the baby shot for the third time didn't force painful laughter, the cop who left his Glock 26 on the toilet paper dispenser in a theater certainly did.

From his cold, dead hands?

27. I followed some links on that page

the first story is about a 24-year-old guy in Michigan. He posted youtube videos of himself talking to the police while he was "exercising his open carry rights." Later on, he ends up shooting his girlfriend and suiciding himself. The thing is, I think the police officer who is talking to him on his youtube video is the girl's dad.

33. here you go

Here is the link to the news story about the murder suicide.
http://www.mlive.com/news/kalamazoo/index.ssf/2013/06/cassie_pell_23_and_rob_pratt_2.html

His girlfriend that he murders is Cassie Pell, and it says her father is a Plainwell MI public safety officer.

Here is his video on this link:
http://www.mlive.com/news/kalamazoo/index.ssf/2013/06/rob_pratts_youtube_videos_capt.html#/0

The story says "The officer in the video, James Pell, is the father of Cassaundra Pell, 23." and no the video he does call him Mr. Pell.

I can't imagine how that man must feel.

29. Yes, I watched part of that video.

The guy is walking his dog down the street, carrying a shotgun, talking on the phone, making a video, and smoking a cigarette. Yes, a real multi-tasker, as you can tell by the shakiness of his video. I get the same anticipation watching it that I get from seeing Wile E. Coyote open a ACME delivery. Except with motion sickness.

Sad, but if he didn't commit a homicide, he was a serious accident waiting to happen. I hate to say his girl friend should have dropped him first time he walked down the street showing off his juggling skills with a loaded gun.

He's certainly done a lot for gun control now. I know there are going to be other patriots like him as this "flaunt your gun rights" movement goes on.
