‘Badass Teachers’ Fights for Public Education

A group calling themselves the Badass Teacher Association (BAT) launched a campaign on Monday against America's federal education policies.

The 15,000-plus strong Internet group spent Monday making hundreds of calls to the White House switchboard to tell President Barack Obama to replace Arne Duncan as Secretary of Education. Instead, the teachers want a lifetime educator who better understands and empathizes with teachers and parents.

The White House call was the first action since the group started about a week ago with an initial 100 members on Facebook.

The group is part of an ongoing revolution in education in which teachers, parents, and students are exasperated and exhausted by the Obama administration’s Race to the Top proposals and the testing they require, the Common Core State Standards, and school closings.

but I don't think the name is appropriate. Why use profanity? And yes, I consider it profanity. I'm a second grade teacher, and most of my students think "stupid" is a bad word. The adults and students don't use those words at my school. I know I'm setting myself up to be slammed as a prude, but the real teachers I work with don't swear in public and are proud to be role models.

It's meant to stir the passions of the adults that must help bring about the changes necessary, but maybe you're right. We need the kids to get involved in fighting for their education as well. Maybe Bad Ass Teachers isn't the best name. I kind of like it though.

Also there are many teachers there who don't believe that being a bad ass is such a bad thing. We've been nice for a LONG time now and where has that taken us?

If you're on Facebook join the group. It's definitely a bottoms up plan, and the members are driving the decisions. So far, the majority like the name. But I certainly wouldn't let that keep me from joining the group. There''s some awesome networking going on there.

Teachers, parents, and students are indeed fed up and ready to fight the current Race to the Top and No Child Left Behind policies. Get rid of Arne Duncan and start funding public education. This is my single issue. I will not vote for any democrat not willing to put massive amounts of money back into public education and stop this ridiculous Ract to the Top crap.
