For those who asked, this case happened post Roe v. Wade. And yes, the patient lived.

I am all for making abortion an un-needed procedure. The best way to accomplish that is to prevent unplanned pregnancies. If every pregnancy in the world were planned, wouldn’t that be an amazing thing?

Imagine if all the money spent on fighting about abortion, on both sides, were directed towards preventing unplanned pregnancies? If we expanded sex education, access to contraception, worked on reducing poverty, and eliminated intimate partner violence (or at least made it far easier to leave).

Finding common ground is hard. I look at Rick Santorum and I think, “You and I have nothing in common.” But you know I’m wrong. We’re both parents. We both love our children very much. And we have both lost a child. And I suspect if each one of use looked at someone who holds a different view about abortion, we could find something in common. Some way to start working together instead of screaming at each other. Could we put aside our dogma and everything that we think we know and just focus on the issue? Unplanned pregnancies?

That's just it, Doctor. For Santorum and the people driving "that side" of this issue, it's not really about unplanned pregnancies. Finding common ground has been tried repeatedly, and they will have none of it. To them this is about Public Morality (privately, they often act otherwise). They may express empathy for one or another individual cases (or not), but as soon as it is abstracted even the smallest degree, it's all about "you should have kept your legs closed/pants zipped, and now you have to pay the price". That's the morality play they demand be enforced on everyone, no matter what real lives it flattens under its steamroller.

A couple of the comments there verify what I've said all along about anti-choicers. This is not about saving babies, it's about controlling other people, imposing their version of 'morality' on others. They are twisted, disgusting control freaks. Check out out this nut talking about sexuality (as if she is an expert).

Kayla, I’m one of those “pro-lifers” to whom you refer. Instead of the scenario you present or waiting several day, driving several hours and paying for a hotel room only to see a ‘back alley’ abortionist, I’d like to see women take a different approach to their sexuality.

What’s that? Personal responsibility comes to mind. Women should be educated that abortion of their pregnancy is not the only answer. How about not getting into this predicament in the first place? If we legalize abortion, it’ll be centuries before we eliminate unwanted pregnancies.I defer in cases of rape incest or the life of the mother. Teach the expectant mother that she has the option of giving the child up for adoption.

...of what I mentioned above. It's really about Unauthorized Sex. It's just that simple for them.

And how magnanimous that she deigns to "defer in cases of rape incest or the life of the mother". Does that include other problem pregnancies, which may not undisputably involve "the life" of the mother but may involve damage that will prevent ever having another wanted pregnancy. Or which have a strong likelihood of complications but are too early to be "the life" of the mother. They tend to treat those cases as "trying to get off on a technicality".

In their black and white world, that's just too complicated.
