Congratulations Ed Markey and Congratulations MA!
And thanks, WRP!

(81,220 posts)I've admired his work for a long time. Glad he's going to have a larger platform and higher profile now!
Two stars were born last night! Wendy Davis in Texas and our new Massachusetts Senator-Elect!
Upbeat news to end the day. On a day when I was yearning for some good news. This morning starts out better, too!
I, too, am so glad for good news today. There's riveting testimony in the George Zimmerman trial today too. Much more is coming out in the trial than was known before. GZ is GUILTY.

(10,942 posts)when Kerry was being considered for State. Massachusetts has a virulent group of rightists and teabaggers that have to be beaten back time again in elections. That process is tiring. The President threw my state into a special election that he could have avoided putting us in by choosing someone beside Kerry. If Kerry wanted out of the Senate, he could have announced that he wouldn't seek reelection in 2014. We won this one, but the President and his people must stop taking us for granted, we are tired of voting. The special election to fill Markey's seat will be coupled with elections in the towns and cities that compose Markey's district, that is a blessing, even better, there are some powerful democratic names in the district and five have shown interest in filling the seat. I sit outside of Markey's congressional district, so my vote for him today won't be available for the democrat that runs to fill his vacated seat.

(2,120 posts)... the GOP here are a special type of mean, petty, sneering assholes. They're the minority and know it, so their hatred and fury has no bounds (not that Republicans are ever happy about much, but they're especially enraged here).
Oh how they rail and gnash their teeth over "Taxachusetts" and the "People's Republic of Cambridge" and the "Koolaid-drinking Volvo-driving hippie lowlives" or some such drivel. I know of some Republicans who moved to New Hampshire because they just couldn't deal with it. One memorable poor slob actually endures a 90 minute commute each way because he just hates Democrats so much.
And thus I would like to invite them all: "Please leave!"

(5,901 posts)Kerry wanted it in 2009 and had to wait for Hillary to move on. Obama owed him a solid for giving him the keynote speech at the 2004 Convention that launched his national identity.
Now Massachusetts has a brand new Democratic Senator, and John Kerry has his dream job.
It's all good.

(535 posts)saying that Boston didn't vote more enough. Remember, even at 15% of the turnout, it's still more than enough to defeat Gomez.

We did finally have a good ending to a previously crappy day for Democrats. Grateful as all-get-out for this double blessing! Wendy's efforts prevailed, after all. And now we have Ed Markey going to the Senate! YESSSS! So grateful that this was how yesterday ended! We needed this! It's incredibly reassuring!!!
There really is reason to be hopeful.

Anyone new to the story: Markey opposed Reagan and the bedwetters in Nicaragua and stood up for justice at home.

I admit I was terrified Gomez would pull a Scott Brown and ride a wave of voter apathy into a partial term in the Senate.
I'm delighted the good people of MA saw through him to the Ted Cruz beneath.
