On eve of Prop 8 decision, Chuck Hagel’s LGBT evolution is complete

Remember oh, six months ago, when we told you that the LGBT community — and some Democratic senators (cough, Barbara Boxer, cough) — were worried/remaining neutral on Defense Secretary nominee Chuck Hagel.

They thought Chuck was, shall we say, less than gay-friendly after his 1998 remarks about San Franciscan James Hormel, who had been nominated to be an ambassador. Back then Chuck was worried about “openly, aggressively” gay folks like Hormel representing the U-S-of-A. And no, he didn’t define what “aggressive” gayness was all about.

... OK, so flash forward to Tuesday — literally hours before the Supreme Court was to decide the Prop 8 and DOMA cases — when Hagel addressed a group of vets at a Pentagon Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual and Transgender Pride Month event.

On Tuesday, Hagel said: “Our nation has always benefited from the service of gay and lesbian soldiers, sailors, airmen, and coast guardsmen, and Marines. Now they can serve openly, with full honor, integrity and respect. This makes our military and our nation stronger, much stronger.”
