Glenn Beck, dressed in a Boy Scout uniform, compares Paula Deen to MLK, Columbus and Magellan

Beck: Food Network Firing Paula Deen is 'McCarthyism'
By David

Conservative radio host Glenn Beck is accusing the Food Network of McCarthyism after it fired celebrity cook Paula Deen over her admitted use of racial slurs.

Wearing what appeared to be a Boy Scout uniform on his Monday Internet broadcast, Beck said that Deen "doesn't sound racist."

"When you go down the road of suppression -- suppression, discouraging people from speaking their minds, striking terror in the heart and being a slave to political correctness by making them all go away, you're engaging in McCarthyism and we regress as a society and become less free," he explained. "How can people advance if we suppress any thought? How can we advance if we train people not to rock the boat?"

"Where would the world be if Columbus and Magellan and other world explorers believed conventional wisdom that the Earth was flat? Or they were told, 'That's it, you're not going anywhere, to jail with you'?" Beck asked. "Where would be be if Martin Luther King didn't speak and challenge segregation and racism?"

After the first time I heard him openly mock a caller comparing him to George Washington. He & his minions went on to say how he was really more like Jesus, etc. All the while laughing at those who would make such comparisons. I think his whole act is a shtick... his audience is just too damn stupid to get it.

until the government comes after her for her racial slurs, she is free to be as racist as her career will allow...and the PRIVATE corporations with which she does business are free to terminate their relationship with her based on the terms of their contract.

Plus, there's also that whole 1st amendment freedom of association thingy that protects them as well.

but they'll keep harping about democracy even though these are private decisions being made by private individuals over their own business ventures.

kind of how free market capitalism works, right?

can't have it both ways.

"Where would the world be if Columbus and Magellan and other world explorers believed conventional wisdom that the Earth was flat? "

Probably at the same place it is today; as people generally didn't believe that the world was flat ever since the times of ancient greece.

Living in ahistorical fantasy-land, where Columbus looks like an Aryan overlord and has lots of eggs must be bliss.

Oh.. and Glenny... Racists NEVER sound racist too other Racists. That's a huge part of what perpetuates bigotry.

I don't want to come across as a party pooper but I don't think posting things that Glenn Beck says is something that DU needs. It's your choice, of course, and I AM being a board nanny, I'm not going to deny that, but all that happens on threads like this is that a whole bunch of people get really pissed off with a fat silly white man that has nothing substantive to say. All it does is depress and anger everyone.

Deen's being dealt with and rightfully so. WE WON.

I'd vastly prefer to hear LEFT WING opinions of DEEN than right wing opinions of left wing opinions of Deen. Why should Beck's nonsense get any air time here?

It isn't my place to tell you what to post, if you prefer to link to the voice of Beck + co, it's as much your board as anyone's. I just thought I put it out there to see what you think.

Hope you understand where I'm coming from.

Beck is basically defending racism. Beck is most probably a racist himself, given his faith.

Deen wasn't rocking the boat, she was using a word she had used all of her life without ever choosing to acknowledge that it was insensitive.

Wed Jun 26, 2013, 12:43 PM
Jun 2013

that is not a boy scout uniform. it might be an "imitation" one or the look he is going for, but that is not a bsa uniform. In the bsa uniform, the council patch goes on the left shoulder with the troop number in red squares below, the american flag on the right, a round blue world scouting patch above the left pocket, the words boy scouts of america in red above the left. There would not be the weird colors on the collar or the left epaulette. For boy scouts, there would be a single red band on both epaulettes, for cubs a single blue band on each. And that ties not right. I don't know if he is trying to look like bsa or just generic brownshirt paramilitary. There are many pictures on the web of bsa uniforms.

eta also, I can tell by looking at the video, that the shirt itself isn't a bsa shirt that has been added to with his own decorations, the epaulettes and pockets aren't made the same.

I guess Beck is arguing against the free market?

Deen's public persona on the Food Network was all "Southern charm and hospitality", all smiles and accent and down-home cooking. Now that a lawsuit has brought to light casual racism and boorish boss-behavior by her and her brother at their restaurants, it sours Deen's persona considerably. FN didn't want to deal with that baggage (certainly their sponsors didn't), so they decided to not renew her contract which expires at the end of the month.

Maybe Glenn's projecting a bit about someone leaving a network when their contract was unlikely to be renewed.

I always pegged him as the sort who is good at manipulating his target audience, but who may have no actual ideals. Does a grown man actually do things like this seriously? The crying, the blackboards, wearing a boy scout uniform?

I think he's just riding the crazy train to the bank. That, however, means he's probably a worse person that he would be if here were a True Believer.
