Hot dogs, apple pie and antibiotics (A message from Consumer Reports/Consumers Union)

Did you know that Americans will eat some 155 million hot dogs this July 4th? And that the vast majority of those wieners will come from animals rouitnely fed antibiotics, just so they can survive in cramped, filthy conditions?

Unfortunately, this overuse of antibiotics in our food animals is breeding drug-resistant superbugs, threatening the effectiveness of our antibiotics for when you or I really get sick.

Congress needs to put a stop to this, and so does the industrial farm complex. But if we wait around for either of them to act, it may be too late for our antibiotics.

That's why I just signed a pledge to show my independence from antibiotics this July 4th. By taking this pledge, I agree to buy and serve only poultry, beef or pork that's not routinely fed drugs this Independence Day.

The more of us who stop buying this meat, the more pressure we put on industry to change their risky practices that are leading to the spread of antibiotic-resistant superbugs in animals and people.

Will you join me in taking this simple July 4th pledge? It may be just a signature, but it shows we are committed to making sure our life-saving antibiotics are there for when our families really need them.

Just go to Consumers Union's website to take the pledge, it only takes a few seconds. And have a great July 4th, one that's free of antibiotic-raised meat!

They review beef, chicken, turkey and veggie dogs - and some rolls.

No condiments though!
