For the first time in weeks, we are getting a good rain in Colorado Springs. It was almost 100 degrees today and the forecast was for possible rain tomorrow with temps cooling down to 75-80 degrees. Finally!!! Thank Jehovah!

(13,141 posts)I'll try to do better. Surely there is mercy
for this poor dry land. I will entreat the
great Dog to fill the rivers once again.

(102,208 posts)and someone had to give me and my dog a ride back to the safety of my basement--hail, tornado warnings and heavy thunderstorms...
I'll take the rain and the cool, but heavens, I could do without the rest.
At least I have a nice cool basement to wait it out and my girlie dog is surprisingly calm...

(26,355 posts)Colorado's semi-arid - one step short of desert, so even though there's lots of infrastructure such as dams & such to capture mountain snow runoff and divert rivers, we do run out. Most of the natural water that comes out of the Rockies gets diverted, leaving a small fraction to go downstream. Farms and cities have to pay a premium to buy water rights so they have enough water to irrigate crops and provide tap water to residents. It's one of the reasons why fracking is such an environmental problem - it uses huge amounts of water, and it contaminates that water with nasty chemicals & petroleum products, making it unusable for other stuff like drinking or irrigating. Don't get me started on Colorado water law - it evolved to be especially byzantine to manage a very limited resource.

(58,162 posts)northern illinois has had the same amount of rain as the entire last year. southern wisconsin`s and northern illinois`s rivers have been at flood stage twice in a month and a half. some areas of the chicagoland and madison wisconsin received 8+ inches within an hour and change .
one of the storms that roared out of colorado last week ended up causing tsunami off the coast of new jersey.
what climate change?
