http://www.businessinsider.com/marines-prepared-to-move-into-egypt-2013-6Amid anti-government demonstrations planned for this weekend, roughly 200 combat-capable U.S. Marines in southern Europe have been put on an alert status should they need to protect the U.S. Embassy or American citizens in Egypt, CNN is reporting.
The Marines were told to be ready to deploy within an hour, and would be flown in via MV-22 Osprey, the Marine Corps rapid deployment aircraft.
A state department spokesman told CNN that the move is precautionary, and that the U.S. fully expects the Egyptian security forces to be able to protect the American diplomatic facilities.
The move comes less than a year after a diplomatic facility in Benghazi, Libya was attacked by Islamic extremists who killed four Americans, including the U.S. Ambassador to Libya, J. Christopher Stevens.

In an overabundance of precaution, because of all those that smeared the President, it is quicker going to start
an action, than it would have.
ironic isn't it.

(297 posts)200 is a company sized force and FAST companies train for these things, not that a MEU doesn't, but this would be more in line with them.
My mistake, Italy detachment longer exists. FAST would come from Bahrain or Spain. Any way that it happens (MEU or FAST) they can be ready fairly quick.

(2,667 posts)I understand how the Navy is different than the Army or Air Force, they have boats. I understand why the Air Force is different than the Navy and Army, they have airplanes. I understand why the Army is different than the Navy or Air Force, they have neither boats nor airplanes (in any appreciable numbers) but they do have men to put on the ground with rifles and tanks and jeeps and all other manner of ground equipment. But why we have a Marine Corps is just beyond me.
That said, you may recall that the Administrations continued response to the attack in Benghazi was that it was the host nation's responsibility to protect our embassy. That was the Secretary of State who kept repeating that line, you may remember her, her name was Clinton. But now apparently an unidentified 'state department spokesman' has overridden her words. Either that or we have another case of CNN reporting nonsense.
