$1,200 for school supplies? Price rate jumps triple inflation

Parents, you aren’t imagining it. School supplies are more expensive this year.

Huntington National Bank’s annual Backpack Index shows school supply prices jumped an average of 7.3 percent this year, far outpacing inflation at 1.39 percent.

Almost every basic item has risen in cost since last year, some by only pennies, others by up to $10, according to the analysis.

“We’re not sure what’s driving (the increases). Maybe plastic is more expensive,” said Mark Reitzes, president of the Southern Ohio/Kentucky region for Huntington.

I am unfamiliar with school fees for elementary school. I have only heard of them for high school sports and activities.

I cut and pasted from the registration packet- this doesn't include the supply list:

Remember to BRING YOUR CHECKBOOK for the following: (You may write one check for the first 3 fees listed below; you will need separate checks for the others.)
$75 School Fee
$25 Exhibit Fee
$25 Museum Passport / Transportation Fee
$10 School T-shirt (required for learning expeditions)
$70 for Fall Sport (if participating; grades 6 – 8 only)
$6 P.T.A. Membership (optional)

The $25 museum fee is for field trips ("learning expeditions&quot .

here are the supply lists:

I got my 25cent crayons and 50cent markers and a few 17cent notebooks.... if it weren't for sales I'd be screwed!! I have a kid going into 9th grade, one going into 3rd and my youngest is entering preschool. I try to go stock up when they have the sales. I have a stock up box I store the stuff in. It helps when the teachers need extra stuff too. Then I still have to go get clothes and shoes. I am feeling very anxious right now.

So I went through grade school in the 80's. I don't believe more than $50 was spent on going back to school for any given year. Once I started working at 16 I bought my own supplies. At most it was a few folders, pack of paper and pencils and maybe some fresh duds. Usually it was just a pack of paper and a pencil. I was a minimalist while everyone else had Trapper Keepers and massive back packs I had a loose pack of paper and badly worn pencils.
