(26,142 posts)because although I generally think the government works for the 1%, I had to apply to re-open my unemployment claim last week and was delighted to learn that I still had extended federal benefits available, which allows $100 more per week than a new claim with only state benefits!

(92,389 posts)I don't think Americas government is the problem I believe and I've seen that we can change the way it operates for the better as long as we work at it and stay at it.
I understand there are some that have been doing just that 4 times as long as I've been doing such but the .5 steps for net gain is worth it.
In this case if we get a progressive congress it wont matter what Obama thinks...he'll have to fight them and us...
If we keep focusing energy on what the negative is vs fixing it with a progressive congress then we can expect the same

(92,389 posts)...then my point stands; I don't think "our" government is THE problem.
"our" government is ran by Americans...replace them and focus energy on doing such.
I see more energy here focusing on WHAT the problem is (and it's not Obama, the government etc) than focusing on practical solutions to fix it.

(2,424 posts)Half of those will say it is entirely a Republican problem.
It is actually based on how you perceive government.
My view of government is much different than it used to be.
We focus on symptoms instead of root cause. For example, it doesn't matter how big or small government is, if it is corrupt. In fact, if government is corrupt, one could argue that bigger government equates to more chance for corruption. In other words, you cannot win an argument for greater government role, if the government is corrupt.
Fixing bad influence is priority #1. Then we can debate what government roles should be.

(37,573 posts)it is not a direct harm to me for this trickle down policy to rule. A few dimes might even be thrown my way.
But I say the government works for the top 20%, clearly illustrated by the permanent tax cuts they recently passed. $3.7 trillion in tax cuts. With $2.4 trillion going to the top 20%. They are clearly the primary beneficiaries. They got 65% of the benefits even though they are only 20% of the population. The bottom 60% of the population, OTOH, gets less than 20% of the benefits. Almost symmetrical that way, eh?

You're not wrong, but the bulk of government programs 'work' for the peasants
Which of course is why the people you're talking about want to gut them

(31,706 posts)I have the federal government that takes care of the highways and provides funding for my local schools. Then there's the state government that just approved medical marijuana and oversees regional transportation? Or there's the local government that operates my local schools, pick up the garbage and protect my property from theft or fire? As usual, broad brushes never show detail...
