(16,020 posts)I was in touch with my ex this week. He used to be a flaming liberal with a good soul. He was all about the "takers" and how tired he was of them. It was like he was invaded by aliens or something. It made me really sad. I really think Fox and other media is brain poison. I really do.

(43,049 posts)He's 100% on our side, and, afik, he needs the money.
It's the annoying hypocrites on the other side making noise that kinda brings up the question.

(32,073 posts)Tammy Duckworth and Heidi Heitkamp are two that I know of. I also saw that Al Franken is donating his pay during the shutdown to charity. I suspect there are more where that came from.

(70,443 posts)Unlike some in Congress who claim they wont be taking their salary, Senator Al Franken (D-MN) specified the charity to which his salary will be sent. Franken will be donating his salary during the GOP shutdown to Second Harvest Heartland, a hunger relief organization that works throughout Minnesota.
Second Harvest Heartland is a great organization that works throughout Minnesota, providing vital assistance to families who would otherwise go hungry, said Senator Franken in a statement. Just as I was prepared to do in 2011 when we faced a possible shutdown, I wont be taking my salary. I believe that while the government is shut down, donating my salary to charity is the right thing to do, and Im going to make sure that money goes toward helping people who might be badly affected by the shut down.
The Senators office explained that he chose this organization because he said people who rely on the federal governments safety net programs may need help making ends meet as a result of the shutdown.
Jamastiene
(38,187 posts)He is doing something proactive with his pay. If he just didn't take his pay, it wouldn't help anyone, but doing it this way, it can help some of the people who might be most harshly affected by the shutdown. That is very smart and very admirable. I wish he was my Senator.
TreasonousBastard
(43,049 posts)whatever the answer to that is, Franken is doing a good thing with it.
He can well afford, it, though, unlike some others in Congress.

(43,049 posts)the hundreds of thousands more who see income drops from this.
As I said in another post, I don't think they should be required or shamed into giving the money back, or away, but it's a strange PR problem more than anything else.

(24,721 posts)Then they backtrack by selecting to open certain federally-funded programs that have been poll-tested for their future political ads.
It's the hypocrisy, selfishness, ignorance, & shame that makes the news.

(43,049 posts)I guess I'm wondering more about appearances here.
It just seems like the right thing to do for Democrats to share the suffering. I'll agree they aren't required to, but it just seems like a proper thing to do.

(9,033 posts)I know North Carolina is the most blatantly gerrymandered state (Ds 51% if the vote, 4 of 13 seats...) but they have also been subjected to the worst, most abusive, most reactionary government policies in the last few years. Maybe by 2014 they will be ready to boot a bunch of the pukes out, including this stupid git.

She was caught being herself, a 21st century "Christian family values" Republican: Fuck the poor. reduce corporate taxes and eliminate taxes on the wealthy. while screwing working-class Americans.
Start a war you'd never in a million years volunteer to fight in (Bushs Romneys, Ryans, Gingrichs Nugents talking about you) and then ban news agencies from being able to film flag-draped caskets coming home. Bush this is your's alone.
She changed her tune when she heard the audio of her statement and realized she couldn't claim "it was taken out of context."
