Commie-Cast has intentionally slowed down my internet connection!

saying that you see a particular video or site buffering is not evidence that your connection is being throttled.

In the first place, that sounds pretty strange here on DU.

In the second place, internet speed varies all the time. We all experience Internet slowdowns from time to time, caused by a wide variety of issues. Unless you see this happening on a regular basis, day after day, odds are it's just an Internet slowdown, not throttling by your provider.

Jumping to conclusions is not usually a good idea.

I do know that some service providers say unlimited use.....and while that is true......on my smart phone, with unlimited use, the company drops me to a slower bandwidth after an X amount of data has transferred. I still have unlimited use but, videos don't play instantly etc.

I'm on du a lot. How would a service provider that gave me say 5 gig a month affect me. I'd like to change providers but the only way I can is with cable which sucks around here or satellite and they say something about a 5 gig cap.

if you're on satellite, that cap is what you're getting for your monthly payment; if you exceed it, then you're either cut off or metered and paying extra per gigabyte. For wired connections, the cap is a data transfer allowance; if you exceed it you'll see your connection throttled (slowed from say 20Mbps to 600Kbps) or shut off completely (some ISPs would send warning letters the first time you exceeded and then you'd lose your account the next time).

On edit: if you're on a 5GB per month allowance and you only use text-based fora and light web browsing and don't download or stream video and audio, you may get by. If you're doing anything more than just posting to fora and reading email you almost certainly won't be.

I was afraid that the satellite cap would come back to bite me in the fact that I do watch a lot of video clips and sometimes stream music. I like to watch the good stuff that DU'rs post because I do get 99% of what I refer to as news from this site.

Aside from unacceptable caps, if you need VPN to work from home or any other reason, you won't be happy. 56k dialup is faster than VPN over satellite. With all the handshaking used in VPN, the latency makes it unbearable.

that currently plagues the industry. I visited a major website a couple of days ago that wanted to run over 90 scripts, all but three of which came from other servers, for a one page article. Needless to say I will remain ignorant of content from that source.

Sometimes I run a homebrew port 80 server on localhost that spits out a one liner to replace their idiocy. Lots of mainline sites run about a 20/80 Content/Junk ratio.

In that respect, it's exactly like communism.
