It was the phony right-wing "Christians" who were the worst.

Your comparision of the two is like comparing Martin Luther King with George Wallace, there is a good reason we view them both very differently.

(11,411 posts)reincarnated as a native South African in the days of apartheid and see how he handles it. My guess is he'd be working with the oppressors. What a narrow minded creep, that Cheney!

(6,001 posts)Darth Cheney may be the most vile person in my lifetime.
Nelson Mandela is possibly the greatest symbol of humanity in my lifetime. He is one of the greatest freedom fighters in the history of mankind.
Of course that wasn't what I was referring to though. I was referring to people tsk tsking the right for being*vile* and *hateful* when we all know we will be saying things as bad or worse when Darth finally dies.

(86,332 posts)just how much further we have to go before we get close to a civil society in some areas of our collective culture.
Sad, almost sadder than Mandela's passing itself. May they reap what they sow.

(5,477 posts)When a prominent rightwinger goes, there's plenty of grave dancing here...but also there's always someone who will make sure we all hear about that one time the dead wingnut was right about something or did something good.

(20,317 posts)The actual people being noted.
Comparing someone like Dick Cheney to Nelson Mandela is like comparing Snidely Whiplash to... well, Nelson Mandela. I honestly don't see what any decent human being would have against Mandela at this stage. But even a fan of Dick Cheney would have to admit he's polarizing.

How do we know he wont rise up and try to eat the guts of the living?
To be safe someone should pith him or put a round in his ear.
Let him rot in hell.
I don't understand the vitriol in this case.....can anyone enlighten me?

(56,582 posts)That statement was more or less factually true for a while, but misleading (ANC took money from the Fifth International and then ignored them; Mandela's views on armed resistance changed over time).
Mostly they don't like black equality in South Africa (or anywhere) and think that the country is in much worse shape now than 25 years ago.

http://www.rightwingwatch.org/content/remembering-religious-rights-attacks-nelson-mandela
"President Reagan added the ANC to the US terrorism watch list, a designation not removed until 2008, and unsuccessfully vetoed sanctions against the apartheid regime. Many Republican lawmakers did break with the Reagan administrations stance, but all 21 [Senate] votes to sustain the veto were cast by Republicans.
Mandela faced criticism from Republican leaders including Dick Cheney, who described Mandelas ANC as a terrorist organization, and Jesse Helms, who turned his back during Mandelas visit to the U.S. Capitol. Even in 1998, Eagle Forum founder Phyllis Schlafly lumped Mandela together with notorious dictators."

(455 posts)It's just their masks coming off. Mandela was devoted to freedom, justice and liberty for everyone in his country. He was the real deal, embodying what we hold as the basic values that founded our own country.
The Freepers push a perverted form of phony, flag waving "patriotism" to provide cover for their beliefs, which really just amount to fascism.
The Freepers despise democracy and lash out with viscous hate when they are actually confronted with it.
