(8,646 posts)At the time my 2 youngest took the same bus and everyday when I put them on the bus all I could hear was that one Sandy Hook mother who said, "I put 2 children on the bus, but only one came home." That quote still sticks in my head. There's no describing the horror of that. Not a day goes by that I put my kids on the bus that I don't think of that and hope that never happens to us or any other children, ever again.

(16,350 posts)My gosh. School shootings are becoming so commonplace. Will we ever get a handle on this? Or will we keep going down this road as if it doesn't matter?

(3,970 posts)I wasn't there that year, but I have a lot of friends who were. It is a very small campus. So 12/14 is one of those dates we remember. Then Sandy Hook happened last year on the 14th. Then the one yesterday in Colorado. Yesterday was particularly frustrating because I had spent most of the day thinking "man, tomorrow is going to be a drag", and then finding out that, no, *today* and tomorrow were going to be a drag.
Makes for a depressing December.
Most people don't remember the shooting at Simon's Rock (even though we were one of the first, even before Columbine) because not enough (!) people were killed for it to be called a "mass shooting". Which, I guess, is a good thing. But nobody remembers it, which is sad.

In the February 22, 2013 PBS Need to Know show titled "After Newtown" (see Newtown Mass Murder) journalist Maria Hinojosa reported, "In fact, in an interview with Newsweek in 2007 after 32 people were killed in the Virginia Tech shootings ... Wayne Lo said: 'The fact that I was able to buy a rifle in 15 minutes, that's absurd. I was 18. I couldn't have rented a car to drive home from school, yet I could purchase a rifle. Obviously a waiting period would be great. Personally, I only had five days left of school before winter break ... If I had a two-week waiting period for the gun, I wouldn't have done it.'" [5]

(224 posts)People often ask, "How many times does this have to happen before something is done?"
My answer is always: zero. We don't need another one. Do something now. Period.
Well, we've had 28 mass shooting since Newtown. If THAT isn't enough, I don't know what is.
Shameful.

(34,582 posts)it is truly sickening. I have grade school aged grandchildren, and that day hit me harder than 9/11. It was much more personal. You shouldn't have to worry about your kids while they are at school. Another sickening thing- some assholes wanted to call the anniversary "Guns Save Lives Day".

(4,815 posts)when talking about Sandy Hook. It is so overwhelming. The fact that so little has been done in response to something so unimaginably repulsive speaks volumes about the soul of America. I can never figure if it a result of cowardice or denial or maybe a little of both, but whatever, it is shameful and it has become a blight on our country.
