1. This is one of the worst scandals of this country, and it goes under the radar.

It is the gnarly appendage of the war on drugs that has ALSO cost this country resources beyond anyone's imagination.

Prison privatization has to stop.

Incentivizing and monetizing human misery is a particularly pernicious evil.

4. This is exactly the "raison d'etre" of corporate right-wingers: they love to

make profit on human misery. It somehow makes them feel better about
themselves, when they can make someone else feel more miserable. Is
this sick? Of course it is! They make up 2% - 4% of the general population.
They always have been around. And wherever they are (the world over)
there have always been and there will always be wars for profit. They can't
help it. That's the way they are.

Sociopaths love profit and power. Their numbers in high places are out of
all proportion to their 2% to 4% of the general population. That's because
they are driven to get to the top of the money and power structure, and
they don't give a damn how many people will have to suffer and die, as
long as they can get to the top of the heap, because the top of the heap
is where they can make the most profit and harm the most people.

3. In a "Democracy", some things should NEVER be Privatized:
Sat Dec 21, 2013, 01:50 PM
Dec 2013
* Our Courts and Prison system

* The Military (no armed "contractors&quot

*The Hardware & Software used in our elections

*Our Public School System

*Law Enforcement

*"Intelligence/Security" Agencies

A Democracy grants many privileges TO the People,
but also confers some RESPONSIBILITIES.
It is each citizen's responsibility to provide Oversight and Accountability to the above essential functions of our "Democracy".

ALL of the above should be 100% Publicly Owned and Administered by The People,
Transparent, Accessible, and Accountable TO The People.
The Privatization of any single function listed above should raise Screaming Red Flags for every citizen.

Banking
Public transit
Infrastructure
Power Generation
Health Care

I'd also argue that we would be in much better shape if the government would legalize, inspect, and regulate most forms of what are called "vice." Canada has just taken a step in that direction. Imagine the revenue that could be extracted to pay for all these things we've just decided government should handle.

8. I never even knew there was such a thing as a private prison until I read about it on
Sat Dec 21, 2013, 02:22 PM

the Internet a few years ago. I believe private prison owners have the same
type of mentality as slave owners of the past. Their greed for profit blinds
them to all empathy for a fellow human being in anguish. They also enjoy
being the cause of the pain and misery to these people -- especially since
they can't fight back. It's not only profitable to cause them more pain,
it's also safe to do so.

7. There is no just, moral or economic reason for this industry to be legal.
Sat Dec 21, 2013, 02:22 PM
Dec 2013

It's nothing but a growing cancer against our democratic republic and has no redeeming value.

Governmental corruption, public disenfranchisment, militarized police, alienation of the American People from their government and 21st century slavery will be the only result for allowing such a despicable industry to exist here in the "land of the free."

It should be against the law for a for profit prison industry to exist, the state should have sole power for the task of incarceration and if public taxes won't support it, then draconian laws should be eliminated and/or reduced.

Thanks for the thread, Scuba.

13. I once knew a guy who spent time in a private prison.
Sat Dec 21, 2013, 04:43 PM
Dec 2013

He said that they took him and three other guys across the country, to transfer them from one prison to another. He said that they fed them McDonald's along the way and took them to rest stop bathrooms, but never a motel for the night. No showers, nothing. He said that you would want to puke if you had smelled the inside of the cage that they traveled in, when they got to their desination.
