A strong earthquake shook northern Japan on Wednesday evening, and a small tsunami was forecast for part of its Pacific coast.
The Japan Meteorological Agency said the tremor was 6.8 magnitude. A tsunami of about a half-meter was forecast for Hokkaido island's central and eastern Pacific coast, and for Aomori and Iwate prefectures.
Iwate prefecture, or state, was heavily damaged by last year's earthquake and tsunami. Thousands of aftershocks have shaken the region since then, nearly all of them of minor or moderate strength.
The epicenter was about 146 miles (235 kilometers) south of Kushiro, Japan, on Hokkaido island. It was a relatively shallow 16 miles (26 kilometers) below the ocean floor.

Earthquakes are scary, but it is mostly the tsunamis that kill. Mostly.

We can not feel earthquakes that far away.

(27,247 posts)I felt a little shaking but it was no big deal here. Checking Yahoo Japan, I see that the strongest shaking on land from that earthquake registered a 4 on the Japanese seismic intensity scale, meaning that things could have fallen off of shelves but major damage was unlikely.

(27,247 posts)This time it was off the coast of Ibaraki/Chiba, close to where I am. There was a lot of rattling and shaking, and it was a seismic intensity of 4 here, and 5+ by the coast.

(53,339 posts)TOKYO A series of earthquakes rattled Tokyo and northeastern Japan on Wednesday evening but caused no apparent damage or injury in the same region hit by last years devastating tsunami.
A magnitude-6.8 earthquake first struck the southern coast of the island of Hokkaido, causing a small tsunami. The Meteorological Agency issued tsunami advisories along the northern coast, prompting some communities to issue evacuation advisories to residents near the coast.
A swelling of 20 centimeters (8 inches) was observed in the port of Hachinohe in Aomori about an hour later, with smaller changes reported elsewhere. The agency lifted all tsunami advisories within about 90 minutes.
About three hours later, a magnitude-6.1 quake shook buildings in the capital. It was centered just off the coast of Chiba, east of Tokyo, at a rather shallow 10 kilometers (6 miles) below the sea surface.

(27,247 posts)it wasn't so intense-- only a 3 on the Japanese scale, just enough to get people's attention.
