Would women/feminists really benefit much from trying to discuss rape with right wingers? The political right pretty much represents everything they're fighting against. The so called "traditional values" of Republicans would relegate women to the status of second-class citizens or worse.

Since we typically champion civil rights and egalitarianism, it should come perhaps as little surprise that feminists look chiefly to us to help further their goals.

sadly, some people kept picking at the scab, saying things about rape that really were, at the most charitable estimate, foolish. Women's issues are still very serious, and indeed, if we manage to win elections, it is because women will continue to assert themselves.

clearly, the "we have to idea what we're talking about regarding rape" contingent sits squarely on the GOP side--with not one, but TWO senate candidates taken down over the issue.

So....I am just saying it seems to be one of those DU phases like pit bulls, JFK conspiracy theories 24/7, and porn.

Hopefully it dies down and we can focus on actual critical news and issues rather than bashing one another over the head because someone didn't genuflect low enough for another person.

7. Rape isn't "germane"?
Mon Dec 30, 2013, 08:52 AM
Dec 2013

In what world? Some of us take our lives seriously and don't see them as trivial or a distraction. This is exactly the kind of bullshit that pisses people a lot of people off. Perhaps you should try looking outside of your sense of entitlement for a couple of minutes to imagine what it must be like for so many hundreds of women on this site to be survivors of rape and domestic abuse.

If you can't support something as basic as my right to safety, why would you even consider yourself a Democrat? Women are the majority of voters in the Democratic Party. Your insistence that issues that are of central concern to many of us are somehow not germane is wholly insulting. We take enough shit from the Republicans on this. Why do you feel compelled to dish it out too? You could simply trash the threads rather than making a point of declaring concerns of a number of women on this site to be less than "germane."

I am sick to fucking death of my body being a proxy for political games. Basic human rights matter. So excuse me if I think my life actually has value.

I don't care nearly as much about Social Security as many of the older members of this site because I know I will never be able draw on it. But that doesn't mean I feel compelled to tell people their concerns are not "germane" because they aren't about me. The incredible sense of entitlement that allows some to declare the experiences of others insignificant is truly mind boggling.

Because most of the participants have me on ignore anyway, and they've locked me out of HoF, so I couldn't respond to half of them if I wanted to. This, despite my having done work with NOW, NARAL and a bunch of women's advocacy groups. But I was "victim" to the Outrage Brigade when I used a street term in reference to a stripper once. It, too, generated multiple threads and hundreds of posts over days.

I don't think they even begin to realize how difficult they themselves make a dialog. I'm frankly afraid to say anything anymore. And I suppose that is the intended goal.

http://www.significancemagazine.org/details/webexclusive/1424839/Rape-more-common-than-smoking-in-the-US.html

The United States is experiencing an epidemic of sexual violence. New findings from the National Intimate Partner and Sexual Violence Survey (NISVS), a study launched by the Center for Disease Control and Prevention in 2010, report that nearly 1 in 5 women are estimated to have been the victims of rape, defined as unwanted completed or attempted sexual penetration, including victims who did not have the capacity to give consent (owing to intoxication, for example). In almost all cases, the perpetrator was someone the victim knew (91.9%) and more than half of the time was their own partner. Young adulthood was the period of highest risk for first sexual victimization. For 80% of female victims, first rape occurred before age 25; for 42%, before age 18.

Maybe when we can get people to stop committing sexual assaults we wouldn't have to talk about them. We also need to get stupid repugs to understand that an intra-vaginal probe that is not medically requested by the doctor is a sexual assault with an object. We also need to stop thinking of women as the only ones who are prone to sexual assaults. In other words, the way we look at sexual assaults needs to be more expansive. Narrow mind-ness is for those who troll.
