Indian gang-rape victim dies after being set ablaze

http://www.usatoday.com/story/news/world/2014/01/02/india-gang-rape-victim-set-afire-dies/4296417/

Six Indian men face murder charges after a 16-year-old Indian girl they are accused of gang raping twice in October died Tuesday, a week after she said two suspects had set her on fire, according to police and news reports.

An autopsy revealed the girl was pregnant, the Hindustan Times reported. DNA tests are being conducted to determine if one of the suspects was responsible.

West Bengal police and local authorities are being assailed for allegedly harassing the girl's family and concealing her death-bed statement until Thursday. Police had treated her burning as a suicide attempt.

high-profile rapes in India - in 2012 a woman was gang raped on a moving bus and virtually disemboweled in the process. This particular girl who was set on fire was actually gang raped in two separate incidents. Indian rapists don't confine themselves to Indian women either - a Swiss tourist was also gang raped, I think last year. Those rapists were arrested, tried and given life sentences. Google "rape India" and you'll see lots of links referring to, e.g., "India's rape crisis".

Police say Indian gang raped twice in hours

The incident comes only days after the anniversary of the fatal gang rape of a woman on a bus in Delhi

Ten people in India have been arrested after a 21-year-old woman was gang-raped twice in one night by two apparently unrelated groups of men, according to police officials.
Six of them have been charged with gang-raping the woman on the evening of December 24, a police officer told Associated Press news agency on Friday, adding that a juvenile male was additionally detained for not informing the police about the crime.

Officer Monika Bharadwaj said the arrests were made on Thursday after the woman complained that she was abducted and raped while visiting a friend in Karaikal, a port city in Pondicherry state.
After nearly three hours of captivity in the first case, she was released and called for help only to be gang-raped by an apparently separate group of seven men, the official said.

Police have been questioning the accused to find out whether they knew each other or belonged to two separate groups, Bhardwaj said.

and then we had this disgusting comment by an indian politician:

1. and, right on schedule, we have this crap:

DMK MLA questions girl's character And the worst - A DMK legislator, AMH Nazeem said on Friday that the incident could be a 'case of prostitution. "Rape case has been registered but it could be a case of prostitution". The legislator added that such incidents happen because the youth in the area are depressed.

If it was not bad enough that this woman was raped twice in one night then died after being set ablaze! Damn it.

Then Nazeem, a politician ( male I assume) has the audacity of saying she may have been a prostitute...

Wednesday, local police hijacked the hearse and tried to cremate her body, telling her family to "go back to Bihar," their hometown, according to the Times of India. Her parents said some officers and local "goons" tried to force her father to surrender the required death certificate.

"The police took away the body forcefully and tried to cremate it ... but could not as the death certificate was with the girl's father," an opposition Communist Party member told the Press Trust of India. "After the news spread, we too rushed to the crematorium and protested forcing the police to retreat."

to treat women better is through economic means (boycotts, protests, marches, etc) but then I remember that unlike say apartheid, the poor treatment is so thoroughly ingrained in what is a deeply patriarchal society - and the roots originate thousands of years.

India has a great many things going for it - at least, I should say, the India of it's top 10%, but even among the women at that level, the cultural discrimination is rampant. And in many states, the lopsided sex ratios is making things worse (leading to kidnapping, wife "sharing", etc).

Aside from the excruciating poverty millions face and the dilapidated infrastructure, its treatment of women is definitely one of the country's vexing issues. I was pleased to see thousands of women protesting a year ago, but Indian society is slow to change - especially culturally. As the recent SC ruling on homosexuality also showed, it's a socially conservative country that has been exposed to the liberalism of the West and it has no idea how to process it. And many men seem bitter and resentful that they can't find a bride - since they have either been aborted, or because women are also exposed to ideals of equality - especially in education.

Indians can't blame this on "the laws aren't being enforced", because the cops are the criminals themselves. It's time for the country to do some deep soul searching. It has a lot of potential, but this kind of thing makes people wonder if it has the capability to be a regional power, let alone a global power many Indians (like my relatives) like to boast about.

Well, if that's the case the rest of the world needs to boycott the US, since gang rapes that go without conviction and lead to death are not uncommon here. Only 3 percent of rapes in this country result in jail time. And we're supposed to boycott India? This isn't Sweden. We're hardly in a position to point fingers are how other countries deal with domestic violence. If people in this country are concerned about treatment of women, they could try starting at home.
