Faux Newz: Ship Stuck in Antarctic Ice Proves ‘Global Cooling’

Fox Business Network host Stuart Varney paused Thursday morning to deliver a quick weather report regarding today’s massive nor’easter and also mentioned the 52 passengers on the Russian research ship who were successfully rescued after being stuck in ice for 10 days. According to Varney, these two stories are enough to prove his theory of “global cooling.”

“Attempts to rescue the passengers using ice breaker ships failed,” Varney reorted. “Rescuers finally got through using a whopping, great big helicopter that was landing on the supposedly, very thin ice.”

“So, it looks to me like we are looking at global cooling,” he continued. “Forget this global warming. That’s just my opinion.” He then moved on to his next question, “Can you invest in the weather?”

12. Thin ice supports global warming

Since so much ice has already melted in the Arctic (as proven by the drilling going on) the salinity of the water is lessened. Fresh water freezes much more quickly than normal sea water. This is why the ice froze quickly and yet was thin, because of the layer of fresh water on top from the melting ice caps. This ice actually supports the theory of global warming, but there are none so blind as those who will not see.

According to the same source, the NH sea ice is ~0.6 million km2 under the 1979-2008 average and therefore the global average is almost ~1 million km2 above average.

I thank him for that. His 'global cooling' idea is the same as saying "the Sahara exists, so it looks to me like we are looking at global desertification" or "there are pebbles in my driveway, so it looks tome like we will all turn to stone." It's ludicrous. Ugh. This seemed apt somehow:

19. It's trapped by ice that came from a land glacier

ie this indicates a large loss of land ice (the process that raises sea levels). More ice in the ocean now, but it will melt. This is, after all, the Antarctic summer; this is not ice that has formed because of colder ocean temperatures where it is, but warmer temperatures on land, speeding up the glacier.

“We've been so unfortunate – there was a massive breakout of very thick, old ice from the other side of the Mertz glacier, and it was swept to sea,” he said. “There's just no way through it. Many of the icebreakers just can't get through.”
