Packers to offer fans free coffee

Temperatures at Lambeau Field are expected to be minus-2 degrees when the Packers and 49ers kick off and are expected to drop as the night continues. At the so-called Ice Bowl, also in Green Bay, it got down to minus-13.

I think the coldest temperature I've ever experienced was -10 F or thereabouts. That was cold enough. And that was 30 years ago

Riding in that weather is one time you want to slow down, to keep the windchill factor manageable. Other than that, its just almost painfully clean and crisp air. The moisture in your breath crystallizes as soon as you exhale, and makes little rainbows around you as it drifts to the ground; everything sparkles.

on some mornings when the temperature was 0 degrees F or so. Eleven miles one way. I would have to wear glove inserts, then cover them with produce bags, then put regular gloves on top of that. And two pairs of socks with produce bags sandwiched in-between, and an army surplus cold weather helmet liner on my head. And I was still cold-- getting started at least. A year and a different job later, I walked 3 miles in -10 degree weather on top of crunchy snow with some of the lousiest boots you can imagine, and even with two pairs of socks and produce bags sandwiched in-between, my toes were still frozen by the time I got home.

but I always kept a pair of chemical warmers handy for the coldest mornings, to put in my gloves, then in my pockets at work (as a mechanic, I work in a semi-heated shop). Its been a couple of years since I had to do that, though. 3 weeks ago it was -6 one morning, but I hadn't checked before leaving for work so I didn't really dress for it and didn't bother with the chemical warmers..it wasn't too bad. I suppose you get used to it, then in spring when its 40 degrees and the sun's shining, everyone's out wearing shirtsleeves and planning barbecues.

I'm on the pinky of Michigan's mitten. We've been taking a pounding this winter! Between the snow and the cold, it's been brutal!

Apparently, there's plenty more where that came from.

Stay warm and dry everyone!

which, at the coldest point on the map, is about 1320m above sea level. That is not the same as temperature at ground level.

Forecasting the surface high using the 850-mb temperature has been a popular forecasting technique.
...
The method itself is very easy. Method needs to be done on a Skew-T to ensure accuracy. From the morning sounding, note the 850-mb temperature. Take a parcel of air at 850 mb using the 850-mb temperature and bring it dry adiabatically to the surface. The temperature of this parcel after it is brought to the surface will estimate the high temperature for the day.
