Just heard on the local news about all the flu cases in Crossville, Tennessee. The Doctor they were talking to said 2 have dies and two more are on ventilators very critical in the past two weeks.
It's going to be another bad few months from the looks of things. Please, if you normally get a flu shot and have not yet, do so.

(12,665 posts)Especially the elderly. However, the two people that died in Crossville in last few weeks were both mid thirties. Kinda scary.
Doctor stated that the Eldeerly may have built up their immune system to this strain from having past strains.

(12,665 posts)this new ACA is sure helping a bunch of new people, huh? Big, big step in the right direction.
I had shingles. I mean, damn! I've never before, or after, had anything more painful for just a little rash.

(3,014 posts)Started antivirals today. The presentation was not classic. Low grade fever and started with a harsh cough. I had to plea to get the influenza test as the PA thought for sure it was just a bad cold.
I actually have my PhD in influenza research and made all kinds of excuses for not getting the vaccine. Too late for me (getting natural immunity). Though not too late to get the shot if you haven't been sick yet.

(3,014 posts)I am already feeling a little better on day two. I think I have some residual immunity from past infections and vaccines. The hubby is really bad off and my daughter has a runny nose and cough (she was the only one immunized this year). Take care out there.

Stay warm.

(86,332 posts)a couple days ago. I was chatting with my friend, the pharmacist, and she told me that in the nearest city (a hundred miles from here but the nearest city where people from here go a lot) has a frightening number of swine flu cases and that in the local town, there are so many cases of flu that there is no tamiflu left and both types of flu in the area are something the flu shots of the year don't handle.
I have decided to stay home for a while and not go to town or drive all the way to the city any time soon. Eeek.

(11,785 posts)It's the H1N1 that was going around in 2009.

(3,014 posts)And the vaccine won't necessarily ward off infection. It can lessen the severity of symptoms if you do get the virus, though.

(1,241 posts)My girl friend just got out of the hospital with the flu. Is taking Tamiflu but still pretty sick. I haven't been no where near her for about 4 days. I wanted to go over and pick up her little pooch because she doesn't feel good enough to take it outside. She lives in a high rise type building, in the city and the dog loves it out here in the country. So, can I safely go get the dog. I had the flu real bad last year for 11 days, should I get a flu shot for this year. That stuff last year kicked my ass and I don't ever want to be that sick again.

(12,665 posts)Get the shot anyway. You should be safe to take care of her doggy.

(3,014 posts)An H3N8 which we don't get (I've been working with it for years and probably seroconvert but have never gotten the flu from it). Influenza A viruses are typically species specific, though they do cross the species barrier to infect other individuals from other species - usually an end host as a new species doesn't usually pass along to other members of that species. There have been cases of cats and dogs getting human/swine H1N1 from their people, but it is very rare. The pooch could spread as a fomite, but, again, that would be unusual as influenza dies fairly quickly in the environment. Maybe you could play with him quickly at a park to get some UV light and wind to "decontaminate" him. Ultimately, you should do what you feel is best for your health.

(9,533 posts)i had a friend sent to rehab after heart surgery. They discharged him after two days because of a bad flu outbreak in the rehab facility that sent two patients to the hospital.
Laying low, hoping to feel better soon.

(10,570 posts)Every flu season is different, said Wooten. We think the numbers will increase before season ends.
The strain impacting people the most right now is the H1N1 virus, formerly known as the swine flu which caused the 2009 pandemic. But, now the strain is included in the vaccine and people are protected from it if theyve received the flu shot.
This is the one strain where theres no cause for stress, added Dr. Wooten.

(2,132 posts)...lost his 12-year-old child to the 2009 swine flu outbreak. It was awful.
I was a proponent of childhood vaccinations before that happened, but since then, I have always gotten my family vaccinated against the flu.

Thank you for the well wishes. I hope you and your family stay healthy, too. (And warm, if you are experiencing the horribly cold weather that many of us are feeling right now.)

(12,665 posts)We are trying to stay warm. I'm in Tennessee. It was -1 this morning. Got up to 9 where I am. Nine degrees!!!! If it sounds like I'm whining when so many others are much much colder, it's cause I am. It's not suppose to ever by minus anything in Tennessee. lol!
We had wind chills in the -35 degree range here in Omaha today. The kids were excited about being able to stay home from school.
You aren't whining! It's too cold to go outside, and that's not a good thing for anyone.
