A Brunswick County event report obtained by WECT indicated that two officers were called to Boiling Spring Lakes home after 12:34 p.m. on Sunday afternoon. One of the officers told Brunswick County Dispatchers that there had been a confrontation with 18-year-old Keith Vidal, but repeated several times that the situation was under control.
A second unit with one officer arrived 14 minutes later and notified dispatchers that he was forced to shoot the teen in self defense.
Mark Wilsey, the teen's father, explained to WECT that members of his family had called the police for help with his son's schizophrenic episode. He said that officers shocked Vidal with a Taser several times to get him under control.
"We don't have time for this," Wilsey recalled one of the officers saying before he fired in between the two officers who were holding the teen down.

Get used to the headline. It is currently a major issue with law enforcement everywhere. Policy and protocols need to be drastically overhauled and standardized nationwide.

(8,170 posts)1960s;
Dad was a GP (family doctor) in Manchester when he had a call from the police that one of his patients was ill and would not admit them to his apartment. Now father knew that although this patient was schizophrenic or bipolar he (mostly) trusted my father so he went to find a Sergeant and 4 Constables outside with dustbin lids and an opinion that the gentleman inside was "a bit agitated". Dad knocked and after some negotiation was told he could come in.
Inside was the patient with an axe and an opinion that "they" were coming for him. Dad carefully kept the kitchen table between himself and the patient, having to sprint round it a couple of times before the patient became calm again. Eventually dad persuaded the sick man to take his medications including a tranquiliser and finally was able to disarm him and get him to agree to being "sectioned" (again). No arrest, no handcuffs, no police cells; they all waited for the ambulance and one of the constables made everyone a nice cup of tea.

(60,010 posts)No, this is what is wrong with the policing system.
Police killing mentally ill people is widespread and way too common.
