Canada's ex-defense minister: Aliens would give us more tech if we'd stop wars

Paul Hellyer, who has long insisted that aliens have visited Earth for many years, says that when aliens saw the atomic bomb they decided that we were a great threat to the cosmos.

http://news.cnet.com/8301-17852_3-57616630-71/canadas-ex-defense-minister-aliens-would-give-us-more-tech-if-wed-stop-wars/?tag=nl.e497&s_cid=e497&ttag=e497&ftag=CAD5920658&tag=nl.e497&s_cid=e497&ttag=e497&ftag=CAD5920658

This is, of course, not new, nor is it the Onion...

Canada's former minister of National Defence Paul Hellyer testified at the Citizen Hearing On Disclosure (CHD) last month in Washington D.C. that aliens are living among us and that it is likely at least two of them are working with the U.S. government.

Hellyer, whose beliefs on extraterrestrial life and UFOs are well established, made the statements at the non-governmental hearings chaired by six former U.S. congressmen and aimed at, according to the event's website, doing "what the U.S. Congress had failed to do for forty-five years — [sic] seek out the facts surrounding the most important issue of this or any other time — [sic] evidence pointing toward an extraterrestrial presence engaging the human race."

I see problems on both sides of the debate on the subject of alien visitors.

I don't see other than data, that there is much difference in the religious and scientific view that Earth is unique. It's a sort of Earth creation chavinism, even from evolutionists. Earth history gives a lot of facts to support this view, though. But what if as certain points it was tweaked by visitors just as we fool around with plants and animals?

That is repugnant to religious people, and equally so to believers in science. They will likely be the ones who laugh hardest at this man. They, like the climate change deniers, don't see it in their knowledge. So it's all trash.

The thought that we have been tinkered with genetically by an advanced civilization against our will is both hilarious and depressing.

I suspect there are civilizations out there among the stars that equal or surpass our own. This is what this guy in the video is saying. We've had SETI doing its work to find those ohers. This guy was high up in government. But see, he's supposed to be crazy, so you can't say that!

Just as the Earth was flat, and if you said otherwise you are a heretic. We have a way of making heretics out of anyone who doesn't ascribe to the dominant thought. But that doesn't prove anything, just what the majority think. Half the folks in this country believe Faux News, for example.

Total belief in alien visitations or UFOs has repeated an age old desire of humans not to grow up. They say that comeone will come and fix things up for us. Or they are messing us up so we can't fix it. I say, we must grow up and do it.

My opinion is, that NO ONE coming to save us from our stupidity. There is no benevolent race of beings that loves or fears us so much they stay up nights worrying. We did this, we are responsible for whatever is going to happen to us, and if we can't, then we feel we are doomed.

But never all of us. Earth history has evidence of population collapses in all kinds of animals and species in the past, some man-made and some not. Humans want security. It's hard to get.

We are lucky to be alive on this planet and don't even appreciate it, or each other very much. It's a good message to tell us to stop killing each other. Or so most of us think. Some think it's a necessary thing, and they aren't even stupid but employing a destrucitve strategy that is very wasteful.

Wonder anyone at DU lead their life differently if they believed what this man says?

been discussing this for years. And some pretty good scientists after a few drinks.

There's no tangible evidence for aliens, or for God for that matter, so science can't go there. But, scientists can still wonder, and dream.

creationism. I think it is the recording of a relatively local event from our view of the galaxies. And that there is no beginning or end to the universe, it would have to be infinite. Because if it is not, what's outside of it, even on the material plane, that we can see and measure?

We hear of different dimensions that are not measurable currently, or at least not adequately explained to the masses, but may be in the future.

Scienctists are doing a great job of demystifying many things. There are laymen claiming their manifestations are not hallucinations, but that they have opened the doors of perception.

Some feel drugs give them a better perception of time and space and another plane of existence. Whether that is a misfiring of the brain, or a gift of imagination, can be shown with tests, but not all. So it's subjective, anecdotal and does not meet an empirical standard. Yet.

To me, the universe and reality is perceived from points of view or perspectives. Very much like human society and thinking. Some are of the opinion that only their view is right, and anything else is heresy, woo or stupidity. I find this disappointing from those who claim intelligence and believe in science, but unproductive, as it ends the search.

I prefer the scientific method so that something useful can be replicated or used to create something, and not just entertainment. But many great minds have been suppressed over the years by scientific conformity, and more so as we now see, profitable conformity.

It disallows anything that doesn't add to a particular calling or their sphere of influence. IOW, some associations are not what they seem.

Do you think Michio Kaku's views on aliens, living in artificial bodies and his definition of terrorism are woo or cutting edge?

He seems to have taken on the mantle Carl Sagan once wore of popularizing science to Americans.

Realistically, though, we have no evidence of life anywhere in our galaxy, and we have a pretty good view of the closest parts. As we look further away, even within the galaxy, if there is life the travel time would be prohibitive.

It's tough to believe we are the only sentient beings in the cosmos, but unless we find out about time travel, dimensional wormholes or other highly fanciful things there's little chance we'll meet anyone else.

but that doesn't answer my question about cave paintings and other drawings and artifacts dating back to 10,000 years B.C., which depict what seem to be ancient astronauts and flying machines.

Maybe this should be implemented as a building code along hurricane prone areas of the Country, saving billions of dollars paid out by insurance companies, thus lowering insurance premiums for everyone. I think you've hit on a brilliant idea!

Stuff like this just hammers it home that people who insist aliens have come here or are working with our governments, are just... clueless. The assumption that things that worry us would worry some other alien race is beyond narcissistic.

Once you have the level of technology needed to make that sort of travel possible, you probably have the sort of technology that would make a nuclear blast to the face little different from a warm day.

Same reason there will never be an "alien invasion" of the likes we see in Independence Day - a species that advanced has literally billions of billions of uninhabited worlds to exploit, for every single inhabited world. Why the hell bother wasting so much resources on invading and exterminating earth for its resources.... when Mars is right there? Hell, you want water? There's the oort cloud right out there, in terms of interstellar travel it's just as close to any alien civilization as earth is, and it's essentially a sea roughly four hundred times the size of our solar system. have at it, aliens, we're not using it for anything other than entertainment, when a chunk of it flies towards the sun.

Seriously the ability to put a big dent in a metropolis, or throw up some radiation for a century or two... isn't going to phase any being that can hang out in the space between heliospheres.
