Dems hopes of winning House take a hit as Mike McIntyre and Carolyn McCarthy announce retirement.

Carolyn McCarthy isn't a surprise, as she has a treatable form of lung cancer, however, Mike McIntyre does hurt the most from the standpoint of winning the House. He probably retired because the writing was on the wall (as it was with Jim Matheson), since his district is heavily Republican and won his 2012 election by just 654 votes against the Republican candidate after the GOP gerrymandered the district heavily. So, it's very likely this flips to the Republicans.

McCarthy, who was elected the same year as McIntyre, represents New York's 4th District, which is more Democratic. It's a seat the Democrats SHOULD hold on to, but one Republicans controlled from 1953 to 1997 when McCarthy took over - so, it's no slam dunk.
