New Jersey Gov. Chris Christie (R) issued a statement on Wednesday, responding to the release of documents showing one of his close aides discussing plans to close lanes on the George Washington Bridge in September.
What I've seen today for the first time is unacceptable," Christie said. "I am outraged and deeply saddened to learn that not only was I misled by a member of my staff, but this completely inappropriate and unsanctioned conduct was made without my knowledge. One thing is clear: this type of behavior is unacceptable and I will not tolerate it because the people of New Jersey deserve better. This behavior is not representative of me or my Administration in any way, and people will be held responsible for their actions.

Updated to add this from Steve Benen:
This posturing quickly fell apart today, when we learned the story actually makes perfect sense: Christies top staff was directly involved in crippling Fort Lee, on purpose, as political retribution for the local mayor choosing not to endorse the governors re-election. Christie canceled his scheduled event for this afternoon and hasnt appeared publicly. He did, however, issue a written statement this afternoon:
<...>
Note, over the last month, Christie dismissed the very idea of this story as absurd. Today, the governor is no longer denying what is plainly true: his administration abused its power and punished some of the governors own constituents simply to punish a mayor who refused to play ball with Christies campaign...The materials that caused todays firestorm were incomplete some of the documents included redactions, and many of the subpoenaed materials have not yet been made available to the public but the notion that some of the scandalous details were taken out of context is a non-starter. Christie is no longer saying the allegations are wrong; hes saying he was out of the loop...no evidence to the contrary has yet emerged. We cant yet say with certainty what the governor knew and when, but it is possible that some of the governors top political aides, including his own deputy chief of staff, orchestrated this dangerous scheme without Christies knowledge and then repeatedly lied to him about what transpired.
But this wont necessarily solve the governors problem. As the Star Ledger editorialized this afternoon, His attempts to laugh this off now appear to be dishonest, though we cant yet be sure that he personally knew about the correspondence of one of his top aides. Still, Christie bears responsibility either way. If it turns out he did know, he is obviously lying and unfit for office let alone a 2016 presidential run. And even if he did not, his officials are liars. If Christie cant control them, how can we trust him as a potential future leader of our country?

(2,419 posts)There is no credible way that this went on without Christie or his Chief of Staff, not only knowing it, but authorizing it. This behavior is absolutely representative of his administration. This is par for the course for him and his lackeys. This is one of the most disciplined administrations in history! Christie's people don't breathe without clearing it with his inner circle. It is totally out of character for something like this to have originated with a staffer. Everything else was under control, but this, THIS, was a rogue action. Right. Punishing many people to settle a political score with one person is his M.O..

(81,192 posts)Glad you're here! I am SO thoroughly enjoying the chew-up-chris-christiefest that's going on, on "Hardball" at the moment! SWEEEEEET!!! This schmuck just may be toast. The longer he stonewalls the worse it'll get for him because that will expand the number of people wanting to get to the bottom of it. We've seen this before, and not surprisingly, the name Nixon has started being tossed into the conversation, too. Reminiscent of the stink that began to permeate everything during Watergate, and I'm glad the comparison is being made openly now. I hope it continues! That's one way to make sure older voters who remember the Watergate days (who also might foolishly be chris christie fans) are jolted back to reality and sensible conclusions.
I can see christie's appeal. That plain-talking, bold, defiant, in-yer-face, rough-edged, pugnacious, "no-nonsense," I'm-just-a-rumpled-average-guy-who-doesn't-mess-around-and-gets-things-done crap is just that: CRAP. But astoundingly enough, it's appealing to many, including those who love to fall in love with the whole lone-gunslinger "maverick" BS. And I'm delighted to see it's unraveling! He's not what they thought he was. WTF? What they thought he was? You don't see "BULLY" draped all over him like he was wearing it around on a neon sandwich board with glow-in-the-dark shoulder straps? You don't see the swagger and the arrogance and the phony Jersey tough-guy crap? This asshole doesn't fool me for a nanosecond. I never liked him. I always dreaded the thought of THAT sitting across the table from Putin or the leader-of-the-week in Iran or North Korea or even friends in Germany, France, or Great Britain. Yeah, THAT is what we need - wonder how many bruises and black eyes he'd leave behind after one of those? That's all we need, another my-way-or-the-highway guy.
I hope this is the beginning of the end of him. I really do! Let him stay in New Jersey and start learning some manners. And maybe even a little humility. Might do him some good.

(9,461 posts)this now. It makes him look pathetic. It isn't like something that transpired in one day. How many inquiries from reporters does it take for Christie to ask his "staff" if this is true? Is he saying that his staff has lied to him since August? They were getting inquiries back then. I guess we will have to believe that Christie either A. Is lying about all of this B. He didn't know and has a very close staff that has lied to him and hid this from him since August.
I think Christie cancelled his appointments so he and his staff could see if there was any incriminating evidence anywhere before he issued his statement. This statement means they don't think there's a smoking gun, er email, anywhere. Let's hope he's wrong.

Fort Lee Mayor Mark Sokolich on Wednesday said that New Jersey Gov. Chris Christie (R) should offer an apology not to him, but rather to the families who were impacted by the lane closures on the George Washington Bridge.
"Don't call me, but call the families," he told Wolf Blitzer on CNN's "The Situation Room." "He has to public address the folks who are specifically impacted by this."
Sokolich said that he hoped Christie was not involved in the lane closures, but that he was starting to believe the governor had something to do with it.
"I'm beginning to question my judgement," the Democrat said.
Sokolich does not recall an endorsement request from Christie, but is glad he did not endorse the governor.
"I'm grateful to my instincts because they have only proven me to be correct," he said. "Nobody should have to do anything like that, or provide any support under threat of retribution."
The Fort Lee mayor called the lane closures the "most venomous form of political retaliation."

(145,063 posts)Hey Chris,
Hows it going?
Well, that was probably the wrong way to start. You aint having a star spangled day, right?
I just read this at CNN.E-mails emerged on Wednesday purportedly from top aides to New Jersey Gov. Chris Christie bolstering suggestions that George Washington Bridge lane closures last year that tied up traffic stemmed from a political vendetta and not bureaucratic incompetence as his administration claimed.
I know you want to be president one day and people generally dont mind political vendettas. In fact, most folks kinda enjoy them.
Except, of damn course, when it means they have to pay for it by sitting in damn traffic which you damn caused. Thats when they say, Well, Damn Chris Christie. He aint sitting his bohunkus in this traffic.
And, you know about that whole The Buck Stops Here thing? Dude, you missed the bus. Youre so out there that you wont get the Today Show until tomorrow.Christie said in a statement that what Ive seen today is unacceptable, adding that he was misled by a member of his staff and knew nothing about what had transpired.
Now how long did that take you?
Sweetie, I could have told you two months ago before all this started that you cannot trust Republicans. Most of them lie so much that they have to hire someone to call the dogs. Hell, theyll lie when the truth makes a better story. Sometimes they lie just to stay in practice.A source close to Christie said there will probably be some sacrificial firing and thatll be it.
Come clean or go home, Darlin. People wont mind if you mess around on your wife, if you start a war just for the helluva it, or scream You Lie at the State of the Union Address. Youll still be reelected. But, traffic. Well, thats a whole nother ball of wax.
And, by the way, when are public officials going to learn that emails from the office belong to the public? Seriously, didnt you learn anything from Jack Abramoff?
