One of the odd things about the Bridgegate scandal is how despite the assumption lanes on the George Washington Bridge were closed as revenge for the Fort Lee mayors refusal to endorse Christie, both Christie and that mayor have cast enough doubt on this story to make Rachel Maddow revisit the question. And she discovered a possible new explanation for why they would have engaged in that kind of retribution in the first place.

(28,856 posts)Christie is using this whole mess to come down on State Senate Dems.
I think this will backfire on him bigtime.

(2,805 posts)My only guess is that he was first "elected" by a Democratic Senate. But it sounds like it is the Governor that has the power to nominate someone. So maybe even though the judge was Republican he was approved by a Democratic Senate and they were mad about his dismissal.
I'm sure Rachel will be on this tomorrow as well. I have to say that this sounds a lot more plausible. The time/date of the actions makes sense. And it would fit with the idea that this was something that was pre-planned against the Democratic Senate leader and could be put into practice with a short email message.
Christie will fall with this revelation if it is true. Rachel will be attacked or revered as one of the few true investigative teevee journalist left if this proves true. She is one of the few who is actually thinking about the motives in this story and is taking a risk in her reporting.

(36,974 posts)The NJ Supreme Court judges initially serve for a 7 year term and then they have to be renominated.
When the 7 years is up they are renominated for a life time seat.
First Christie refused to renominate the African-American male judge in 2010 (that pissed the Democrats off).
Then Christie tried to nominate two or three folks (to that seat) and the Senate refused them all.
Then in 2013 an active female republican judge that had served 7 years and was up for renomination.
The State Senators basically told Christie that they were going to give her very hard time during the confirmation process - that is what pissed Christie off, he probably thought that in the end the Senate would not confirm her - so he pulled her nomination and then held a press conference so that he could gripe about it and publicly blame the Democrats.

p.s. Her husband is on Christie's staff.
So, maybe Christie knew something about her that might have came up during the confirmation hearings or something
Might be more to it than we know.

First question from Mayor Sokolich to Christy.. "No retribution, eh?" The gov gave his word.. damn straight he did.. with the light shining right on it. No squirming out of that.
And, my fave John Wisniewski!
