New Jersey Governor Said He Didn't Remember Where He First Read About Traffic Problems
New Jersey Gov. Chris Christie has given two different timelines of when he learned of lane closures on the George Washington Bridge after they were imposed by his aides, allegedly for political reasons...It later emerged that Christie allies had engineered the closures, which caused massive traffic jams in Fort Lee, N.J., whose mayor didn't endorse Mr. Christie. The governor said he had no knowledge of his allies' involvement in the closures.
In a news conference Dec. 13, Mr. Christie, a Republican, said he learned of the controversy after the publication of an internal email from Patrick Foye, the executive director of the Port Authority of New York and New Jersey. Mr. Foye angrily ordered the access lanes for Fort Lee restored on Sept. 13, the fifth day of the closures. The Wall Street Journal published details of that email on Oct. 1.
"The first I ever heard of the issue was when it was reported in the press, which I think was in the aftermath of the leaking of Mr. Foye's email," Mr. Christie said at the December news conference...Last week, the governor indicated that he had learned of the issue earlier. "It wasn't when Pat Foye's emailsI think there was an earlier story than that," he said when asked at last week's televised, two-hour news conference why he hadn't tried to determine the reason for the Fort Lee gridlock when he first learned of it.
Mr. Christie said at last week's news conference that he didn't remember where he first read about the traffic problems.

Mayhem on the GWB, EMS delays, people complaining, Port Authority Police blaming the Mayor of Fort Lee, frantic snarky messages between Christie's inner circle of officials and his PA appointees, angry e-mails from the Fort Lee Mayor and a NY PA official to Christie officials, and through it all, Christie had no idea until he read it in the news a couple of weeks later. Then again, he's not sure that's when he learned about it.
Could it be because he's lying his ass off?

(2,419 posts)It was when he and David Samson met in July. New Jersey did nothing at the Port Authority without Samson knowing about it. Samson did nothing without Christie knowing about it.

If Christie lied about when he first knew about the GWB he is toast.

(116,464 posts)I mean, let's say he's that out of the loop in his own administration, he didn't know or wasn't curious enough to ask why there was a massive traffic jam at the GWB...for four friggin days?

(975 posts)This must have been big news when it started and went on for days. When did Christie finally wake up to the fact this was going on?
I think he knew it all along and Rachel's narrative seems very very plausible because you know "they're animals", after all.

(116,464 posts)In a bit of a shift from what he said last week, the New Jersey mayor at the center of the George Washington Bridge scandal now says he does remember someone close to Gov. Chris Christie (R) reaching out for an endorsement.
<...>
Sokolich himself may have had to jog his memory about the chain of events. In an interview with CNN's Wolf Blitzer last week, the mayor said he didn't "recall a specific request to endorse."
In denying any knowledge of the lane closures, Christie latched onto that remark during his nearly two-hour press conference last week.
"But the thing that -- the other part of this that just shocks me is as I've said to you all many times before, Mayor Sokolich was never on my radar screen. He was never mentioned to me as somebody whose endorsement we were even pursuing," Christie said.
