http://crooksandliars.com/2014/01/pope-frank-mothers-sistine-chapel-nurse-0...Michelangelo's frescoes in the Sistine Chapel are some of the world's most celebrated works of art. The ceiling depicts the creation of man and the altar wall shows a severe God at the Last Judgment. But the pope told the mothers not to feel intimidated by the surroundings.
"If they are hungry, mothers, feed them, without thinking twice. Because they are the most important people here," he said, speaking in the same room where he was elected on March 13 as the first non-European pope in 1,300 years.
Francis said in an interview last month that mothers should not feel uncomfortable breastfeeding during his ceremonies.
In another apparent first in the Vatican, the parents of one of the babies, seven-month-old Giulia Scardia, at the ceremony were not married in a church, but only at a civil service in a town hall meaning their marriage is technically not recognized by the Catholic Church. But the pope has said several times since his election that the Church must not make children of couples in irregular situations feel like second-class faithful, and he agreed to baptize Giulia Scardia into the faith.

(21,726 posts)The church has a long history of protecting pedophile priests and a sham investigation of one of them is no reason to think any real change is happening... None of this is new. It's wicked fucked up.

(21,726 posts)This whole 'Things don't change over night' is also a load of shit. The pope is the unquestioned leader until he dies and is infallible in matters of doctrine. He could change much of this shit with a word... A sham trial of one pedophile while still hiding others is nothing and it is not being done because of 'politics' or 'culture'... It's being done to try and protect the church and the hell with the victims... As it has always been, so it continues.
Even the faithful should be outraged at shit like the pope allowing breast feeding while he actively continues to hide pedophiles... It's an insult.

There is a word for that, I assume you know what that word is.

(62,325 posts)Do you understand ANYTHING about the law. Eg, the US has extradition agreements with several countries, meaning if a country that HAS AN EXTRADITION AGREEMENT with the US makes a request of them, they will consider the request and most likely comply if the request appears to have merit.
US SUPPORTS TERRORISTS! Refuses Extradition of Accused Terrorist!
Do you have ANY idea of the idiocy of what this claim you just made?
Do you know how often the US refuses to extradite people even when there is clear evidence of guilt, because they do not have extradition agreements with the countries making the requests???
The US does NOT have extradition agreements with some countries, meaning that if such a country makes a request for extradition of someone accused of MURDER let's say, the US will most likely REFUSE to extradite that person.
By YOUR logic, the 'US SUPPORTS MURDERERS and TERRORISTS!'
Unbelievable what I read on this site sometimes. You are discrediting DU with your obvious refusal (or maybe it is ignorance which at least would be forgivable) of the LAW.
The Vatican does not have an extradition agreement with SD or with Poland. What YOU are suggesting that they should IGNORE their own laws, otherwise THEY ARE SUPPORTING PEDOPHILES.
Was Du always like this? I used to come here to LEARN things, not to be fed hyperbole and ignorance and nonsense. No wonder so many of DU's best are no longer here.
Shameful distortion of the facts.
But thank you for confirming what I thought.
Ohio Joe

Yeah... That is protecting a pedophile.
"Shameful distortion of the facts."
What was that?
sabrina 1
(62,325 posts)person to push your obviously biased pov. Whenever someone convicts a person who is not even directly responsible for something of a crime, I have no more use for them.
This is a simple matter. It is a matter of law. And in fact, it appears from several articles I have read that there was NO FORMAL request for extradition, just a 'feeler' as it were. Because when there is no extradition agreement between countries that is generally how it is done. The country making the accusations (more hyperbole on your part btw since all we have are allegations, NOT CONVICTIONS) understands that they have no agreement but might ask if it would be possible. Apparently from some reports that is what happened in this case. A question was raised 'is it possible'. The expected answer was 'no'. NOT to a formal request, but to a question.
You have lost all credibility here. You have distorted the facts AND based on those distortions accused someone of a crime they did not commit.
Shameful to see this here.
Ohio Joe
(21,726 posts)That is the heart of the matter. If this pope had any interest in fixing the church's image on this, he would send the shit back. Instead, he is protecting him.
Legal technicalities be damned... He is protecting a pedophile.
Shameful to see that being supported here.

There are all kinds of bigotry in this world. Not just the kind that get the most attention.
Thankfully you are very much in the minority and this kind of false accusation against someone who gains respect every day from people all over the world, only enhances him.
You might want to try something that is actually true if you want to discredit the man. False accusations only gain sympathy for the targets of such attacks. The more he is falsely accused, the more support he will get. It's part of the process when someone tries to make this world a better place. There are always those who just can't tolerate it for some reason.

(46,659 posts)Spiritual, yes. But not religious.
I'm all for breaking the religious monolith that the right-wingers have relied on for too long. Though I was raised a Catholic, I found a huge split in ideology with other Catholics as they began to pick up the hate talk that is common to right-wingers. We use to be fine with being called Communists because we believed that government should do more to help the poor. And that all changed over the last twenty years. This new pope is shaking things up. I find that to be a good political change.

(62,325 posts)to see the steps this Pope is taking, way outside what anyone expected of the leader of a 2000 year old institution mired in regressive beliefs. Perhaps you'd rather he just continued to ignore issues that are important to PEOPLE so that we could go on hating, instead of recognizing that NO ONE can change EVERYTHING overnight.
Just a short time ago eg, our Democratic President stated that he could not recognize gay marriage, that marriage was between a man and a woman (if you need the video I will provide it for you). He was not the leader of an ancient religious institution, he was the Democratic leader of a secular state, yet he reached the age of 50 still holding on to those ancient beliefs. But pressure from more enlightened citizens and a recognition hopefully that religious beliefs have no place in the politics of a Democracy, he finally relented and did what he always could have done, unlike the Pope, he changed his mind.
To change the direction of an institution as large and ancient as the Catholic Church will not be so easy. But this pope has taken the first tiny steps to do so. Half of all Catholics now disagree with their Church on issues such as Women's rights and Gay rights. They are still believers however and have refused to be pushed out of an organization they want to belong to. And they are making a difference.
But if you prefer someone who is unrelenting on these issues, sorry, we are moving forward and when someone comes along who is willing to piss off the Right Wing Fundies who have USED the Catholic Church for political purposes on Women's rights for so long, I'm going to give that person all the support they need. You go right ahead and throw road blocks in the way of progress if that is what makes you feel better. But a majority of people, Catholic or not, are seeing what you seem to be missing, progress rather than regression. No matter how slowly it happens, and it will be slow, this Pope is slowly moving in the right direction.
MellowDem
(5,018 posts)I'm all for scathingly criticizing bigotry and bigots, not coddling their views by equivocating and excusing. The pope must be a real idiot, moral dunce, based on what people here trip over themselves to praise him for.
The idea that harshly, and consistently, criticizing clearly onerous viewpoints, even if held by the a pope, is somehow less preferable to slobbering over basic human decency that many more people much more moral than the pope have been promoting for centuries makes no sense to me. That the Pope will somehow change his views more readily if progressive sycophants backflip every time he acts human and ignore the disgusting viewpoints he holds makes no sense.
On the other hand, criticizing those viewpoints relative to their wrongfulness and harm they do to others makes all the sense in the world, and is the only way to get through to bigots eventually that what they are doing is morally reprehensible. The Pope should feel fucking embarrassed and ashamed for the deaths, poverty, and harm his beliefs and institution promote. Until he is, I'll treat him like the common bigot he is.

(62,325 posts)not or whether I like it or not. We can either support stagnation among that huge part of the world's population, or we can encourage the baby steps we are seeing this Pope taking. I'm for progress. I felt the same when the President we supported would not come out for women's and gay rights. We were devasted when he cavorted with Fundies who viewed women who had had abortions as sinners. When he refused to respect the Civil Rights of ALL Americans, allowing his own personal beliefs to direct his policies. But we did not remain silent NOR leave the Democratic Party did we?
You are free to support stagnation if you wish. But I will support progress no matter how slowly it comes over hatred, bigotry and there are all kinds of bigotry btw, over regression and stagnation any day.
So far the persistence of Catholic Women who have refused to be pushed out of the Church, much like we refuse to be sidelined by the Dem Leadership when the POTUS was against us, have changed the Church they belong to rather than cave to the Fundie Bullies and their persistence has led to a Pope who has embraced them as members of that Church which up to now, viewed them as unworthy. I can't help it if you choose to remain blind to the significance of what has happened, but my eyes are wide open and I like what I see, finally.
MellowDem
(5,018 posts)Much less consistent criticism, leads to stagnation. I think it's the other way around.
I think that religions especially only change to survive. They are dogmatic institutions. People leaving in droves will force change, or the church will close, otherwise it will be a slow stagnation. The Mormon Church finally dropped racial bigotry because of this.
If the foundational beliefs of religion are not openly criticized, then the status quo and perception of bigotry based on religious beliefs somehow being more acceptable remains.
I think perhaps the most damning thing is that the pope's supposedly progressive views are based in a very regressive reasoning. The same reasoning that the pope thinks the devil is behind marriage equality is the same reasoning he thinks people should help the poor.
So even praising the pope for his progressive views is changing none of the fundamentals and supporting regressive reasoning and terrible logic.

(9,126 posts)Approving of breast feeding is not a stretch, part of the Madonna vision of females solely as mothers. Plus, the majority of the countries in the civilized world have far less of a problem with nudity than the US.
If he had turned to these women and said, "I trust you enough to make your own decisions regarding family planning. I think your life has value, so if you need life-saving care that includes abortion, I want you to get the very best. And I think your spiritual life is so important, I want all women to be equal partners and be ordained in the church."
