Atheists "get off of our country".

Such ignorance. The only saving grace of this opinion is that it's from a northern state and proves stupidity knows no state border.

I'm sure it's someone with a Palin for prez sticker on their truck.

Weeks later we received the following letter from Ms. Shannon:

“While I’ve been thoroughly entertained by the overwhelming number of passionate responses to my January 29th letter, it should probably be noted that, as at least one writer speculated, it was a complete joke. I think it has run its course and at this time space in the Letters to the Editor section should be reserved for more important issues.”

Now we were angry. Numerous attempts to contact Ms. Shannon proved the letter was a hoax, and we stopped printing any letters referring to hers. Shortly afterward, we received a letter from a person telling us the same letter was found in a blog from a woman from South Carolina, and he sent us the Web address.

Whether the author believed what she was writing or not, there was no context in which that letter could be considered satirical. It was trolling plain and simple, and flatly despicable.

I've heard many times someone call something satire when there are no tropes in the piece that would indicate it so. Same with this; this is either truth or trolling, and trolling is not as smart as satire. I've heard many time too that satire must kept close to the truth, but this is an overstatement; satire must have tells in it, it is not obligatory to stay continually close to the truth, you can diverge into absurdity as the text goes on to great comic effect.

I'm embarrassed because I usually don't fall for such hoaxes, but the Tea Party has become so extreme it's hard to weed out the satire. Most certainly a lot of locals were nodding their heads in agreement when they read that.

Among very conservative and progressive friends, I have never heard anything like this. I am fully aware that there are people like this out there, but they are not that common. I am sure you can find an atheist out there who has said something similar. Their opinion wouldn't be worth the paper it is printed on either. I would be willing to bet that this newspapers value isn't worth more than the paper it is printed on.

39. And the day after that joke letter, a rabid anti-Muslim one - from an apparently serious writer
Tue Jan 14, 2014, 11:33 AM
Jan 2014

Someone else wrote in to rebut both of them: Writer: Diversity is country’s strength

It seems to me that the American people need to wake up to the fact that the Muslims are trying to dominate our way of life. If we let Muslims decide our politics, we as a society will be in trouble.

Recently a Muslim was elected to our Congress, they know the way to dominate the American people is through getting elected to higher positions, where they can influence our politics. In years past, a number of Muslims got elected to a Michigan town council and congress. I believe that this is only the beginning, despite an outcry from the local residents, the call to prayer comes over loud speakers and echoes throughout the city.

I fear that if we let anymore of these people get elected they will destroy us from within. They have proven they cannot be trusted and quite frankly are barbarians, anyone who cuts off heads in the name of Muhammad are not civilized people. We as a nation must protect our citizens, because one true agenda of the Muslims is to convert the rest of us to there thinking and if they get elected to higher offices they will have the format to do just that.

So wake up America, they have landed on our shores
