Such ignorance. The only saving grace of this opinion is that it's from a northern state and proves stupidity knows no state border.
I'm sure it's someone with a Palin for prez sticker on their truck.

(89,172 posts)but i have read and heard so many things these days which could easily have been satire but wasn't.

(101,148 posts)While Ive been thoroughly entertained by the overwhelming number of passionate responses to my January 29th letter, it should probably be noted that, as at least one writer speculated, it was a complete joke. I think it has run its course and at this time space in the Letters to the Editor section should be reserved for more important issues.
Now we were angry. Numerous attempts to contact Ms. Shannon proved the letter was a hoax, and we stopped printing any letters referring to hers. Shortly afterward, we received a letter from a person telling us the same letter was found in a blog from a woman from South Carolina, and he sent us the Web address.

Seriously though, did she not realize how close to the tea party's truths she had spoken that she might be taken seriously?

(101,148 posts)And satire does depend on being close to reality. Maybe she was thinking of the views of her governor.

in fact i have seen people say a lot worse and even more crazy. but they were really passionate about it.
this one seemed more like making fun of someone rather than getting a sense of the person's emotional stupidity.

(9,753 posts)Whether the author believed what she was writing or not, there was no context in which that letter could be considered satirical. It was trolling plain and simple, and flatly despicable.

(533 posts)I've heard many times someone call something satire when there are no tropes in the piece that would indicate it so. Same with this; this is either truth or trolling, and trolling is not as smart as satire. I've heard many time too that satire must kept close to the truth, but this is an overstatement; satire must have tells in it, it is not obligatory to stay continually close to the truth, you can diverge into absurdity as the text goes on to great comic effect.

(18,581 posts)I'm embarrassed because I usually don't fall for such hoaxes, but the Tea Party has become so extreme it's hard to weed out the satire. Most certainly a lot of locals were nodding their heads in agreement when they read that.

Oh and "Atheists are the reason crime is rampant"?
That's funny: We don't do evil things because that's the moral thing to do. Religious people don't do evil things because fear of divine punishment is holding them back.

Evidence shows they don't fear divine punishment whatsoever, or that's just for others than themselves...

Brilliant satire
Worst satire ever
An extremely important letter to the editor on the state of America
An insignificant letter to the editor that should have never been printed
That is what it will be declared all in the same thread.

(12,693 posts)Reality is somewhat worse. Here is a a small sampling of the regular vitriol that arrives at the offices of an Atheist organization. Actually these are the tamer ones; many have to be handed over to police agencies.

(30,481 posts)Among very conservative and progressive friends, I have never heard anything like this. I am fully aware that there are people like this out there, but they are not that common. I am sure you can find an atheist out there who has said something similar. Their opinion wouldn't be worth the paper it is printed on either. I would be willing to bet that this newspapers value isn't worth more than the paper it is printed on.

Recently a Muslim was elected to our Congress, they know the way to dominate the American people is through getting elected to higher positions, where they can influence our politics. In years past, a number of Muslims got elected to a Michigan town council and congress. I believe that this is only the beginning, despite an outcry from the local residents, the call to prayer comes over loud speakers and echoes throughout the city.
I fear that if we let anymore of these people get elected they will destroy us from within. They have proven they cannot be trusted and quite frankly are barbarians, anyone who cuts off heads in the name of Muhammad are not civilized people. We as a nation must protect our citizens, because one true agenda of the Muslims is to convert the rest of us to there thinking and if they get elected to higher offices they will have the format to do just that.
So wake up America, they have landed on our shores
