Fox psychiatrist invents ‘data rage’ after theater shooting to blame phones instead of guns

Wow, they're working really hard to spin this one. The problem isn't that a former cop was carrying a gun, lost his shit, and killed somebody. Nope, the real problem was that the victim was in a "rage" -- rage, I tell you -- because he was operating a fucking cell phone.

Fox News “Medical A-Team” member Keith Ablow thinks smartphones may be even more dangerous to have in theaters than handguns.

Ablow on Tuesday said a smartphone caused a retired police officer to experience “data rage” toward a man who was texting in a Florida theater and fatally shoot him.

After Curtis Reeves was ordered held without bond on Tuesday, Fox News hosts Bill Hemmer and Alisyn Camerota asked the television psychiatrist what might have caused the 71-year-old ex-Tampa officer pull out his .380 pistol and shoot 43-year-old Chad Oulson while he was texting his 3-year-old daughter.

“I think we may have to look at something I’ll call data rage,” Ablow opined. “Just like road rage. We know that when people interact with machines that sometimes they feel emboldened to do things that they never would, that it can be tremendously frustrating and that people who could be vulnerable — by the way, they may be impulsive to begin with or explosive — add in technology or a machine and things can go over the top.”

“But Dr. Ablow,” Camerota interrupted. “It sounds like you’re blaming the victim. It’s the victim who was allegedly texting and the suspected shooter was ticked off that maybe his movie viewing was interrupted and then they had this exchange of verbal altercation, and then the victim allegedly tossed some popcorn.”

“We’ve got to blame the shooter here,” Ablow insisted. “But in understanding it, we’ve got to say, ‘Wow, that’s interesting, there was a machine involved.’ Now, we also know in road rage there is a car involved. People seem to be dehumanized by the presence of this car and the fact that they can’t then connect to the individual.”

He's absolutely 100% correct, except for one thing: the "machine" in this case was the gun, and the emboldened person was the shooter.

this doesn't pass the smell test

1) the movie had not even STARTED

2) looks like the cop made NO EFFORT to move away from the cell phone offender

3) projectile popcorn is NOT considered life-threatening

It does seem odd that he had the pistol in his front pocket, assuming that part is true.

Fox toadies are paid well to advance conservative narratives, and undermine liberal narratives. I'm sure they view any story that looks bad for gun owners as requiring Immediate Damage Control.

Daily they agitate hatred and anger in their listeners - now primarily older folks.
The shooter's face looks just like the faces on the angry elderly men I see around town. They try to start arguments when they are waiting in line and often come up with the fox talking points.
Their propaganda is affecting the way our society conducts itself.
Wonder if the shooter listened to the RW hate machine.

... the asshole shot the PERSON using the phone. Silly me.

I can't wrap my mind around this one. I'm not a handheld junkie, but I would probably text my kids or the baby sitter during the previews at a movie. I might even pop off - politely, maybe - at some jackass sushing me for it. I probably wouldn't throw popcorn at him (I wouldn't want to waste the popcorn, truthfully), but I suppose I might if he acted like enough of an assclown.

Now I have to start worrying that someone might pull out a gun and go all Zimmerman on me because his assholish, psychopathic rage has been summoned by the techno-demon????? W.... T....F????????????

The next thing you know, someone's going to pull and brandish a gun at a fast food drive-thru because its taking just too damn long....

is such an egregious offense that it is therefore permissible to dispense with all social norms of conflict resolution, skip over any notions of decency, remove all due process from the interaction and proceed directly to summary execution. The fact that the guy is an ex-cop-the one segment of our society prone to summary executions-never really enters into this debate, does it?
