Related: Editorials & Other Articles, Issue Forums, Alliance Forums, Region ForumsFinally I have a full time job!
It's taken 15 months and a lot of Xanax and Ambien, but I start Friday. It's a union job in an industry
I have 18 years experience in.
If you wonder why it's so hard to land a job, I had to beat out 75 other applicants.
Now since California's unemployment computer system makes the ACA program look like a Cray supercomputer, I haven't had a check since November and I had to enlist the aid of our state senators office to even get a response. I have $20.00 to my name
I still may have to pawn my car for gas money and to pay the credit card and insurance, but that's short term now. My first full check will be on the 31st.
My sympathy is with those still looking and to those the senate screwed today by not extending unemployment.
I am really getting too old for this shit! (Almost 59)

I was told this was a full yime permanent position.
Some equipment has been upgraded so it will be a learning experience also.

(8,492 posts)I'm always careful. People assume I'm a 'he' because of the Uncle Teddy avatar.
I really am excited for you. It's tough out there and you obviously deserve this.

(7,952 posts)What you've been through is almost too much to bear. I have a temp job and will be without a paycheck for at least the next two weeks. I'm in my late 50's too, and I see no light at the end of the tunnel. The very best of luck to you!!!!

(6,323 posts)"If you wonder why it's so hard to land a job, I had to beat out 75 other applicants. " this is what happens when jobs disappear, you get a hundred people applying for one position, but I'm so glad you got, especially at 59. In my field the burnout rate happens in the 40's unless your management.
Good Job and carry on!

(15,139 posts)it is for "older" workers. My husband was laid off at 59, and had it not been for a chance meeting with an old colleague after he'd been searching for 6 months, he might never have found anything.
Hopefully, you'll be able to work as long as you want/need to!

(5,103 posts)Ya know what's funny?
I know it pays between $19 and $30.
I am so desperate we haven't even nailed it down. I am hoping for the $30 based on so much experience but you never know.
I couldn't turn it down even at $19 though. It does have medical and dental which is important.
How far we have fallen.
don't think in terms of "how far you've fallen" - think that no matter what the 1% has done to you, you're still in the game

(10,597 posts)You will make it through this rough patch. I can remember in hard times saying to myself "if I can just make it to next week", and I always did. I just kept on keeping on and holding my head up. You're almost there! I wish there was a way I could help you, buddy.

(3,056 posts)I know what it's like to get that first paycheck after being out of the work force for a while. Just knowing there's a paycheck on the horizon makes everything else easier to handle. After a while "broke until payday" is a walk in the park.
Go get 'em and show them how it's done!

It will be great going to work and having colleagues to interact with everyday. Just the ritual of coming and going can be a pleasure. Picking up a coffee, watching the same old same old people walking their dogs. Listening to the news on the radio on the way. Finding a good parking spot!
A regular paycheck and being able to pay off bills? You must be delirious at the prospect!
I'm really happy for you SCVDem.

(5,103 posts)I got a call from EDD and my past claim is now being processed so I won't need to pawn my car!
Only a few more days of buck a pack hot dogs and cup of noodles!
But it did take getting the state senators office involved to break through the 2 month delay.
This was worse than the ACA. This was Californias new unemployment insurance computer system.
Nor a word in the news.

(24,396 posts)as I have an interview tomorrow with members of the Board of Directors for a job here in SoCal. It pays in the low 6 figures.
I already had a great initial phone interview and initial face-2-face for this job. Third time's a charm?
BTW - I'm 59 and out of work for just over 3 years. Unemployment benefits ran out in August. I really need this to come through!

(24,396 posts)One-hour phone interview went great.
1.5 hour face-2-face with recruiter went great.
1.5 hour f-2-f with board went great.
Two e-mails over the weekend from the recruiter asking me to "hang on" until Tuesday.
Wednesday - got the call they went with someone else.

(2,116 posts)I went through a similar story in 2010, 2011. I worked a number of temp jobs during that period. They helped me pay some of my bills, but not all. My credit rating is now in the tank, and at 63, I see no hope of restoring it. I finally found a permanent job is September, 2011, and have been there ever since.
Hope it works out well for you.

(4,026 posts)I know what's it like. I'm still looking for a full time job myself. I had an interview this afternoon so I'm keeping my fingers crossed. I'm 65 with lots of experience, but when you're older it's a tough go beating out the younger crowd even when they don't know jack shit about anything which is often the case these days. Anyway, congrats! Hope to be joining you soon in your good fortune.
