LAS VEGAS (AP) Lee Roy Myers has everything you'd expect to find in the nation's porn capital in Southern California: sets of a classroom, hospital room, locker room and a bedroom, as well as a list of porn stars waiting to perform.
But his plywood universe is not in the San Fernando Valley. It's a few paces away from the glittery casinos of the Las Vegas Strip.
"Las Vegas is a fresh town, and it's where people need the business," said Myers, whose new studio is part of a boom in X-rated production in Sin City sparked by a Los Angeles law requiring male actors to wear condoms.
The rule and potential opportunities in Nevada were the talk of the Adult Entertainment Expo this week. The annual sex industry trade show culminates Saturday with an awards ceremony for adult films.
"It's not really an option to change the way we make our movies, and moving production isn't that hard," said porn purveyor Jules Jordan, who hid out behind nearly naked models at the JulesJordanVideo.com booth.
Jordan warned reporters not to ask him about condoms.

(10,362 posts)Porn is exploding. Worldwide. The more people who get the internet, the more porn expands.
Eastern Europe is big into it now. I've heard the porn industry is growing in other states like Michigan and Florida.

(20,600 posts)It would be tough to get sin city to pass a condom ban too anytime soon, probably.

(52,152 posts)it is a requirement that the actors use condoms.

(44,173 posts)It gets a lot of publicity when someone tests positive for something, but there is overall less STD's to be contracted there than at a typical bar or club on a Friday night.

(21,786 posts)they routinely test for HIV, syphilis, gonorrhea and chlamydia; herpes? Not at all, and I've seen an estimate (from someone from the Adult Industry Medical Foundation) that at least 50% of porn actors have herpes. So at least one STD is very prevalent.
Niceguy1
(2,467 posts)From what I have read the std rate is very high for the basic stds

As far as STIs go, it's pretty much a non-event anymore.

(36,818 posts)AIM only tested for herpes at the actors' request, which means that their data would suffer from selection bias. AIM was also sued out of business for privacy violations.

Uhh why exactly?
I mean I see lots of condoms on guys in gay porn. I know one of the biggest conventions featuring gay porn, International Male Leather, won't' rent to venders who do bare backing videos.
So if the gay porn business can do this and survive, why would the straight porn industry find it impossible?

(12,778 posts)Our state will be among the very last to legalize pot, even after the feds do. Most of the politicians in this state still think Reefer Madness is a documentary.

Costumes, bare skin, and "naughty" bits will be added later in digital post production.
There will be women playing the parts of men, men playing the parts of women, and everyone playing the parts of gods, goddesses, comic book characters, aliens, animals... whatever the script calls for.
"Real" porn will be made by exhibitionists and posted on the internet for free, or made by sex workers advertising their trade.
Hmmmmm...... it's pretty close to that already. That probably explains this move to Las Vegas more than anything, not condom laws. Lot's of inexpensive, even abandoned housing, easily rented for sets and production, and an active sex trade.
The most rotten thing about the porn business is the dirty dealers, those recruiting young men, women, and children from environments of extreme poverty, drug addiction, and abusive families, or the nasty human beings who post "revenge" porn and other photos and videos taken without the participant's fully informed and sober consent. That's just rape.

(39,308 posts)it is not the kind of thing to bring to a vote and because it would damage the fragile film industry further in LA. However, they really do belong in Vegas, not in neighborhoods with families.

On this one, not so much.

(36,818 posts)I see no reason why porn should be exempt, however it should be under the umbrella of requiring a safe working environment. If there is an alternative to condoms that is effective in keeping workers safe, then it should be allowed. If the incident rate of STDs in porn is lower than the general population (and I don't know if it is or isn't), then the requirement for them seems more like a political solution in search of a problem rather than a workers' safety solution.

- Rubbers anytime a penis is involved.
- Rewriting the pay scale (pretty much everyone is underpaid).
- Mandatory monthly testing for all STIs.
