How to make a little more than minimum wage as a telemarketer

This is dated--I did it between real jobs back when there was no such thing as an autodialer. Before DNC lists also.

1. If it's a scam, quit.
2. Don't take the job unless it's a product that 1-2% of people you contact might actually want. (There really are a few people out there who might want carpet cleaning or photography and suchlike)
3. Play percentages. Dial really fast, and ignore the vast majority of contacts who aren't interested. This takes about 2 seconds to find out. Your supervisor will disapprove of your lack of persistence, but won't do anything to you because you will probably have the best sales record.
4. If anyone has an actual use for what you are selling, you really don't have to be pushy or obnoxious.
5. Quit after a couple of months--local markets get saturated after awhile. This is NOT a career!

Don't want to sell? Try phone surveys--lots of people who aren't busy at the time find them interesting, provided they aren't too long. If they are busy, just apologize and move on.

Not sure I would consider doing this in the 21st century--too hard to determine if a company is operating ethically and weeding DNC number.

It is intrusive, often obnoxious, and always unwanted. I hang up immediately when contacted. Any company who uses it will definitely go on my "do not buy" list because I am on the DNC list.
