(16,994 posts)but you're right. Best to go to the source. The meteorologists I read on Weather Underground (they write a kind of blog) seem to be government employees, too.

(113,253 posts)the weather channel with a friend so we could keep an eye on possible storms a week or so ago, and there was a notice that the channel would no longer be available. now I know why.

(1,558 posts)Direct tv told bain to go fuck themselves...negotiatios still going on.
I have Verizon Fios and the weather channel has disappeared and replaced any another CBS channel (which we already have two channels). So now we have three channels showing the same exact shows. Oh and that does not include the HD channels that I do have but not sure of the channels. So it is possible that six channels are all showing the same CBS shows at the same time. Isn't that great? (roll eyes).

And if Jim shows here, our predicted hurricanes will make landfall, that will be a very bad day in this town. (For the record, one did come in in 1975, it was a very bad day)

(28,462 posts)Seriously, check both weather.gov and wunderground.com against what your actual weather is over the course of a week. weather.gov is waaaay more accurate. It wasn't always so, I was absolutely devoted to Weather Underground, but wunderground was sold a year ago to the weather channel and I've noticed the difference. Even the wundermap is screwed up now.

(19,559 posts)I've been using weather.gov again lately because weather underground just keeps missing the mark. At least I know why now.

(18,890 posts)I was thinking it was just a fluke..... :-l
Does wunderground still do snow totals at their various local stations, hour by hour? I realize most are just high school kids out there with a ruler but I liked it and can't seem to find that function anymore.
Thanks!

(28,462 posts)That wundermap was a wonder, absolutely spot-on and easy to navigate. Now it defaults to information I could not care less about and the information I want to see is hard to find and never seems to load properly. I can't help you with the snow totals, sorry.

(2,805 posts)I was wondering if it was just me. I don't go to weather sites that often but wunderground used to be great. Everything you wanted to know and more. Now, it seems to be just repackaged NOAA information much like Weather.com. I remember when they were bought out and everyone said they would stay the same but something must have changed because I see less and less local "weather stations" in my area. Seems the high schools have dropped out. It was a great resource for local information at one time. A bunch of local people pooing information.
I just don't understand why corporations buy out anything informative and then dumb it down to the point it is useless. Every "smart" tv channel gets bought out and the programming is replaced with reality tv. What the hell? If you don't want to show documentaries of animals then don't buy the Discovery channel. If you don't want to broadcast courtroom trials then don't buy CourtTv. Makes me mad!
Thanks again for your take on wunderground.

(14,061 posts)Dish dropped TWC because they couldn't come to terms on money. I had no idea about this backstory about Bain and TWC. That may explain why TWC has become such a wasteland -- it's been compared to MTV, and that's kind of a spot-on observation. If I want a weather forecast, TWC is the last place I go to get it. Wasn't always that way. Sad.

(529 posts)I caught TWC the night before they went off the air and the reporter (I guess that's what he was) said that direct was dropping them because of money issues. And yes, TWC sucks now. They never show local weather anymore. I understand the need for travel forecasts, but for the love of God, why won't they tell me about my weather? I don't care how crazy this weather is on Mars, I just need tomorrow's forecast and the windchill!
AngryOldDem
(14,061 posts)As I always joke when I turn it on for a forecast, "What was I thinking?"
When I need a quick forecast I either check the National Weather Service or a local weather station that runs forecasts on about a 12-hour loop. TWC has done itself no favors, and I can't blame Direct for not giving in to the blackmail. The product isn't worth it anymore.

(2,978 posts)I couldn't for the life of me figure out why it had become so sensationalistic.
The only weird thing, if indeed it's owned by an avatar of neoliberalism, is that it has seemed to be pumping climate change, but in a very sensationalistic, voyeuristic kind of way. Maybe the strategy is to make it seem so silly that no one believes it, like the alien stuff that's overtaken the History Channel.
Thanks for the other links. I'm afraid to click on TWC now for fear there will be some triggering story about brutally suffering animals or freakish human deaths. It's dreadful.
